Akron’s Popular Drive-In Swensons Eyes Columbus for New Location

Akron’s famed drive-in burger spot, Swensons, seems to be eyeing Columbus for its first location outside of northeast Ohio. Its potential store is set to occupy a former bank at 7490 Sawmill Rd., bordering Columbus and Dublin.

The plan, which would convert the 1.33-acre parcel purchased by MG Rome Hilliard LLC into a drive-in restaurant, was recently recommended for approval by the Far Northwest Committee. The application will be reviewed by the Columbus Zoning Committee next Monday, December 11.

Swensons currently has locations in Akron, Jackson, Montrose, North Canton, Seven Hills, and Stow and is planning another store for University Heights, or Cleveland. The original location, which sits on S. Hawkins Street in Akron, was opened by founder Wesley T. “Pop” Swenson in 1934.

The 83-year-old chain offers a range of burgers, including their popular Galley Boy, a double cheeseburger with two special sauces. Also available on the menu are “lighter fare” items like a grilled chicken sandwich, egg salad, and their Salad Boy, as well has hot soups, milkshakes and sundaes. Other entrees include their shrimp dinner, fried fish dinner and chicken dinner, among others.
