Options for Downtown dining are certainly heating up. Or rather, spicing up with the opening of AJ’s Café at 152 East State Street, the former site of C-Town Market & Deli. With a familiar offering of sandwiches, wraps, and salads, AJ’s brings uniqueness in how they’re presented.

Ajay Kumar, former proprietor of Taj Mahal Restaurant, and now owner of AJ’s Café, is infusing all of his dishes with exotic blends of spices customers should find intriguing as well as compelling. The food is flavorful without being overbearing or especially hot.

Like the Raja Wrap with Tandoori chicken, onions, peppers, and cilantro chutney. It’s an impressive show of vigorous restraint as every element, even the wrap, is allowed to shine. For the vegetarians, the Spiced Chickpea Wrap with spinach, cumin-spiced chickpeas, and tomatoes shouldn’t be missed.

“My motto is ‘spice up your day’, and that’s what we try to do here,” shares Kumar on opening a themed restaurant Downtown. “We have experienced people here who know how to use spice, and we look forward to introducing those flavors to everyone.”

Kumar also offers more traditional sandwiches, like Bourbon Chicken Philly, Roasted Beef Melt, and a Bacon and Egg Wrap for a quick breakfast. He serves daily soups, like Lentil & Spinach, and entrée salads, like the Spinach & Berry.

AJ’s Café also carries fresh fruit, grab-n-go lunches, and cakes and pastries all for between $5.99 and $7.99. A complete meal there, which should also include coffee from local coffee house Upper Cup Coffee, will cost customers less that $10.

The 2,400 square foot restaurant, which comes complete with large comfy chairs for lounging, seats 30, with another 25 available seats on the patio. They offer daily food specials, and hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 7:30am – 3pm, and Saturday, 11am – 5pm. AJ’s Café has no website or facebook page yet.
