AESTHETIC Home Decor Opening in The Short North

The Short North continues to evolve with regular openings, closings and relocations. The retail space at 988 has seen a bit of action in the past year as Flora Home & Garden opened in April only to relocate earlier this month. The store has not sat empty for long as new home decor shop AESTHETIC will be opening there this Thursday.

We spoke recently about the new shop with Adam Johnson, co-owner of AESTHETIC. Our Q&A can be found below:

Q: First, can you tell us a bit about yourselves and your backgrounds?

A: My background is in visual merchandising and visual merchandising manager training for Macy’s and SteinMart. Also, I do both residential and commercial interior design consulting work on the side.

Q: What caused you to want to open a home decor store?

A: After being downsized from my position with Macy’s I decided to launch AESTHETIC as a full time business. Before this, I juggled both careers. Being downsized was the best thing for both me and my business as I now had the ability to give 150% to my brand. Also, friends and family had always loved my home and were constantly asking me for both advice and where I had gotten objects. AESTHETIC as a shopfront was the perfect way to bring my ideas to the public.

Q:With so many existing home decor stores, what drew you to the Short North?

A: Because there are so many amazing home decor shops in the Short North, it has become a destination for those who are always perfecting their interiors. We felt AESTHETIC’s concept was different from what we were seeing and thought we could bring some new ideas to the area. I’d also like to note that Home on High is a great tool for shops focusing on home decor in the Short North.

Q:What types of products will AESTHETIC carry?

A: We call ourselves a ‘curated objects boutique’. We’ll offer furniture, home accessories, tableware, and lighting, as well as smaller gift items like barware, candles, and soaps. We even stock a full-all natural cleaning product line that comes in two scents.

Q:How would you describe the overall style of the types of products you carry?

A: This is the hardest question to answer. It’s always difficult to describe to those who haven’t been in to describe your brand without putting yourself into one box or category. It truly is feminine meets masculine in the way that we’ve brought different genres of design together. Several people have dubbed us as masculine meets whimsy, so for now we’ll go with that.

Q:What do you have planned for the grand opening party this week?

A: The party on Thursday is more of a ‘get to know you’ for us and the neighborhood. We will open full time the following day and will have the grand opening during the November Gallery Hop. Our hours will be Monday through Saturday 11-7 and Sundays 12-5.

Q: Is there anything else we should know?

A: I’d like to mention that we’re so excited to be in the Short North area. It’s such a great community and such an amazing destination in Columbus (and Ohio) for art, dining, shopping, and culture in general. We found our new space in March and have happily waited for our opening day, knowing just how amazing the area is.
