GCAC Presents: A Part of the Art – 44th Upper Arlington Arts Festival

As Labor Day approaches and communities prepare to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers, the Coordinating Committee of the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, which is responsible for the planning and execution of the Festival, is preparing to honor and celebrate our creative workforce. Showcasing fine art and fine craft artists’ work, musicians, performances, art activities and yes, funnel cakes, is only a part of what the event is all about.

The festival and the Cultural Arts Division are fortunate and grateful for all the individuals who choose to become a part of the art this Labor Day by volunteering their time. By working with City Staff, the Community gains a better understanding of their community and how its government serves them.

The Coordinating Committee begins monthly meetings as a group of volunteers who plan the Festival in January. They tackle such weighty issues as: Art Activities Committee—what great experiences do we have this year for our young Picassos? Emerging Artists—there are so many we have to jury the submissions! Logistics—thank goodness someone’s in charge, now where’s my golf cart? Performances—I think I saw that on YouTube? Refreshments—it comes deep-fried AND on a stick? Volunteers—they do all that for a shirt!?

Well, the fabulous t-shirt is just a part of the reason they volunteer. They also volunteer because, in their own words:

“The arts are an important aspect of everyone’s soul. It is through arts events, such as the Labor Day Arts Festival, that the arts become less intimidating. It is a privilege for me to give back to the community through service to the LDAF.”

“I value the artists and the volunteers who give time and talent to making the arts work. Being a supporter of those efforts, I enjoy my time working with staff, volunteers, artists, seeing the success of a good day with an arts festival!”

“I find the opportunity to bring patrons, artists and arts organizations together an honor and an important mission. In the art activities area, patrons can explore various art media, give back to their community helping to create permanent art installations and learn to appreciate artists and art happening locally while cultivating their own art interests and abilities!”

This Labor Day we honor all of our amazing volunteers who make the festival possible every year by generously donating their time and talents to this great community event. Combining talents and skills, volunteers fill a variety of important positions throughout the festival. They range in age and interests and the age of the volunteers vary from students to seniors creating a diverse and eclectic group who are willing and able to handle a variety of tasks.

The 44th Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, central Ohio’s one-day blind juried arts festival on Labor Day Monday September 6, 2010, is hosted by the City of Upper Arlington’s Cultural Arts Division and presented by Farmers Citizens Bank. The festival showcases 200 fine art and fine craft artists, music and dance, hands-on art activities for all ages, refreshments and more in a free alfresco interactive art space held in Northam Park, 2070 Northam Road, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
