Community Shelter Board has been awarded a $6 million demonstration grant from the U.S. Department of Housing to combat youth homelessness in our community.
With more than 1,300 youth age 24 and younger served in Columbus shelters in 2017, it is a top priority for many of our housing organizations to ensure homelessness among youth is rare, brief, and one-time only. This grant will help put the systems in place to work toward those goals.
The federal award is over two years and is being blended with resources from the private sector, in keeping with CSBās longstanding tradition of public/private partnerships. Funds have been committed by The Columbus Foundation and others to support planning efforts.
āWe canāt lose another generation to the ravages of homelessnessā, said Michelle Heritage, executive director of Community Shelter Board. āWe now have a path forward to create a coordinated, comprehensive, community solution to assure that the most vulnerable young people in our community have the opportunity not just to surviveābut to thrive.ā
