Nearly 4000 Residents Sign-up for Yard Waste Service

Columbus residents can still sign-up for Rumpke yard waste service, which begins Monday, April 20. Nearly 4,000 have signed-up so far. The 3,930 customers joined the program by pre-paying on the phone with a credit card or by mailing a check or money order. Rumpke anticipates more requests for service after this weekend.

“The forecast looks beautiful for Saturday yard work,” said Todd Wielinski, Rumpke operations manager. “It’s not too late to sign-up for service. We can accept new customers anytime.”

The yard waste program, which was approved April 6 by Columbus City Council, costs $49.50 paid in advance for service from mid-April to mid-October 2009. Residents can join the program at anytime during this period, and the cost remains the same. Rumpke will collect up to 15 biodegradable (paper) bags, bundles or containers of yard waste per household each week.

Residents may call Rumpke at 1-888-786-7531 for service. Sign-up forms and preparation guidelines are available online at www.rumpke.com.

Yard waste typically consists of organic waste such as grass clippings, leaves, twigs, branches, shrubbery and other garden residues generated during regular household gardening and landscaping activities. Loose materials should be placed in biodegradable (paper) bags or in rigid containers marked for yard waste. Bags are generally available for purchase at home improvement or grocery retail stores. Branches should be cut to four feet lengths and tied with twine or string into bundles no wider than two feet. Each bag, bundle or container must weigh less than 50 pounds. Plastic bags will not be accepted in the yard waste program.
