The 2013 City of Columbus Capital Improvements Budget was proposed today jointly by Mayor Michael B. Coleman and members of Columbus City Council. The $379 million budget calls for funding neighborhood projects including over $65 million dedicated to road resurfacing throughout the city, and a $4.7 million renovation for the Maryland Swimming Pool on the Near East Side.
“When we invest in better places for our kids to cool off and have fun, we’re investing in their health, safety and quality of life,” said Mayor Coleman. “All of these neighborhood investments will strengthen our city and our residents for years to come.”
A similar renovation occurred last year with the reopening of the new Dodge Pool in Franklinton, which was a huge amenity for kids and families last summer.
Additionally, the proposal includes $8.7 million for bikeways development that includes over 100 new sharrow markings, 49 bike boulevard markings, and 1.7 miles of shared-used paths. Nearly eight miles of sidewalks are also scheduled for safety improvements and upgrades.
“Strong neighborhoods include safe streets and sidewalks for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Councilmember Eileen Y. Paley, chair of the Public Service and Transportation Committee. “This long-term investment in resurfacing will allow us to make an impact every corner of Columbus.”
Columbus City Council plans to vote on the budget in April, following a series of public hearings.
