11 New CoGo Stations Coming in July

The CoGo Bike Share system is expanding. A total of 11 new stations are expected to be added this year, bringing the grand total up to 41, which is more than what was previously reported back in March.

“We were able to squeeze in three more stations to the order, which we’re really happy about,” said Brad Westall, Greenways Planner for The City of Columbus. “That means two more stations will be installed around OSU’s campus and the third we were able to obtain through a Columbus Public Health Department grant to serve a low income high and high health risk area.”

That station will be installed in Olde Towne East at the intersection of Champion Avenue and Main Street. Westall confirmed that the placement next to COTA’s Near East Transit Center is designed to be complimentary for multimodal commuters.

Additionally, Italian Village will gain its first neighborhood station at Fourth Street and First Avenue near the Jeffrey Park development. Harrison West will also get its first neighborhood station, located at Michigan Avenue and Third Avenue near Cafe Apropos. East Franklinton will gain a station at Lucas Street and Town Street near Land Grant Brewing and Strongwater Food & Spirits. Weinland Park will get its first CoGo Station at Fourth Street and Sixth Avenue. The Short North will gain two more stations further north on High Street at the intersections of Fourth Avenue and King Avenue. And last but not least, the south and central parts of the University District will get four stations at the following locations: Neil Avenue & King Avenue, High Street & 11th Avenue, Neil Avenue & 11th Avenue and High Street & 17th Avenue.

“Public input was the biggest driver in determining these new station locations,” said Westall. “But we also looked at the most effective ways to expand the system while keeping it balanced for density. Harrison West, Victorian Village and Weinland Park are pretty good bike friendly neighborhoods that had little access, but good proximity to the nucleus of the system. So we’re building that next ring out.”

With the addition of new stations, CoGo will also be increasing the number of bikes in the system up to 410. Westall said that the system will continue to grow over the next few years, and expects new stations to eventually come to Old North Columbus, Clintonville, the Grandview area and beyond.

“We’re trying to get CoGo to approximately 60 to 70 stations over the next few years… that’s where the true impact will really start to hit,” he explained. “It’s been a success so far, but it’s too small with the reach being confined to Downtown, German Village and The Short North. We hope that bike share expansion will be a driver toward more bike improvements for city streets.”

While there are still no plans to have shared memberships between CoGo users and Zagster users in OSU’s new bike share system, Westall says that the new CoGo station locations at 11th & Neil and at High & 17th will enable crossover between the two systems.

“It will be a way for CoGo users to get to the periphery of campus and get access to Zagster — and vice versa,” he explained. “We’ll continue to work with the surrounding OSU community so that they’re hooked up to the larger bike share network. As this grows, I think we’ll have a good network of stations all around campus area.”

The 11 new CoGo stations will start installation within the next few weeks and are expected to be operational just after the 4th of July. All stations will also receive an operating system update that will streamline processes and eliminate several known glitches.
