BY BILL CHRONISTER
Steve Curtis is about a month from opening Ohio’s first zpizza, a gourmet pizza concept that began in Laguna Beach, Calif., in 1986. The restaurant will take the 2,286 square feet at 945 N. High St. once filled by the Emack & Bolio ice cream shop.
Zpizza, which lists about 80 shops across the country and expects 100 by the end of the year, uses high-quality ingredients to create pizzas available whole or by the slice, as well as salads, sandwiches and some desserts.
Prices start at $2.50 for a slice and $5.95 for the daily special of two slices and a soft drink. Salads are priced from $5.50 to $6.95 for a small, and whole pizzas are expected to start at $8 for a small cheese and range up to $19.95 for an 18-inch “zcreation.”

This will be nice. Right across the street from the apt. I will go here when bono isnt open.
I like that they will add some greater diversity of non-meat foods and pizza is always a great thing. I DO wonder how late they will be open. If they are open past 10pm… then I think I will become a customer.
Cyclist, how many pizzas per week are you committing to if we stay open past 10? I’ve seen the Dagwood video so it should be fairly high.
i can’t personally commit to ordering a dozen pies if you stay open past 10pm, but i am fairly certain that you will have a constant flow of customers if you stay open until 3am on fridays and saturdays. the short north REALLY needs a slice shop to assuage the rumbling tummies of bar hoppers AND to combat the current single dining option known as white castle.
+1 on the “late night slice”
Columbus sorely needs this option.
Also agree on the late night pizza need. I’d rather walk down and get what I want than wait on Hound dogs for 90 minutes, though when in a pinch I do not complain. However, I understand that it’s a big financial commitment so I’m not holding my breath.
Lew and I stopped and looked at the menu on the door when we were walking to Rossi a few weeks ago and I liked quite a few of the options. I’m pretty sure there was a greek one that got me excited. Also a mexican pizza that sounded interesting. I love Bono and they will need our support once the sidewalk dining isn’t an option any more, but it will be awesome to have a place like this closer to the north end of the ‘hood. Yeah for more options!!
I would like an arugula salad, thai pizza, tuscan mushroom pizza, curry chicken sandwich, and an apple pie pizza.
kthx.
Probably not all at once though…ow.
I used to get carry out from this place at the strip mall in Aliso Viejo. Yeah, it is pricey yuppie pizza but it is damn good. Then again, Bono Togo is damn good too.
It would be crazy to not have late-night hours at that address on the weekends.
In 2006 there were 69,386 pizza restaurants in the U.S. and 3,838 in Ohio alone. I think zpizza and BonoTOGO can coexist.
We’ll work on the late hours and I hope to see some CU folks eating slices in a few weeks.
Yay pizza! You can always count on CU for a continuous stream of pizza consumption…
I think the only place in town you can get late night by-the-slice pizza is at Flying Pizza on campus.
I don’t think it would hurt to experiment with staying open late on Friday & Saturday night, especially with the High Street location. If you can get the word out to a few bars/clubs and maybe sponsor some events, I’m sure you’d get a lot of traffic headed there late at night when the nearby spots close down.
Either way, looking forward to trying the place out!
Lately it seems that every restaurant that opens up in the Short North wants to have pizza on their menu or soon add it to their menu.
Honestly I would likely only frequent there twice or thrice a month and probably only late at night. I guess I am saying that you can get my money of UDF can when I buy a 4 cheese DiGiornio Pizza.
Will I keep your business aloat? No I wouldn’t, but I am pretty positive that there are a hundred other dudes like me that are going to go to White Castle, UDF, or another late night place for a quick bite.

Right. There are several pizza places already in the SN.
from north to south:
-Kings
-Surly Girl
-Northstar
-Zpizza
-Donatos
-Fabians
-Short North Tavern
-Bono Togo
-Rossi
Plus several deliveries available.
Just for the record, here are some things that set zpizza apart from some of the other pizza restaurants:
-open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner (and possibly late night Fri and Sat)
-we deliver
-pizza by the slice
-organic crust and sauce
-low fat mozz and soy cheese (as well as other cheese options)
-all natural meats
-lots of veggie options (over half the menu is vegetarian)
-all dough and three sauces are made in the store, fresh daily
-over 40 topping options
-whole wheat crust option (soon to have a gluten free crust option)
-also have subs, salads, pasta

That’s very encouraging and will certainly draw a crowd looking for exactly that .
I am looking really forward to having you guys in the neighborhood. As much as I love Northstar, I think I can cut it down to a few times a week. Can I beg you to make good soup? Please? And by good, I mean fresh. Or at least something that can fool me. We need a good soup place BAD. Make good soup and I can guarantee at least 5 purchases a week between my wife and I.
Thanks Tigertree. We have worked on soup but it’s hard to do something fresh because we only have a pizza oven and no other cooking equipment. I’ll keep you posted on if we can come up with something good.
I am looking forward to trying this out! The menu looks great, and I have noticed that you post positive things about other restaurants, including other pizza places, on the board. That makes you a class act in my book and I wish you nothing but success.
Looking forward to some whole wheat crust with lots of spinach! :)
i live down the block, eat out everyday, usually late at night.
if you have kickass salads [tons of greens, preferably spinach] and good whole wheat crust, i’m there at least once a week. you would rule x 2 if you offered a tofu option [instead of chicken] on salads.
