Concert Preview: Yonatan Gat at Ace of Cups

Renowned New York-based guitarist Yonatan Gat will perform this Thursday, March 24 at Ace of Cups in Old North Columbus.

Gat’s music is genre-defying, as evidenced by his most recent release, Physical Copy. Broken into two movements, Gat and drummer Gal Lazer fuse psychedelia with African, South American, and Middle Eastern influences – each gain momentum and layers as they progress. Recorded in a single three-hour session with producer Steve Albini, Physical Copy emulates the improvisation and energy of Gat’s live performances. Brazilian guitarist Sergio Sayeg has joined Gat and Lazer on this current tour, and the trio has become rather well known for assembling in a slightly unorthodox stage formation with the band playing inside the audience on the venue floor.

Gat began his career in Israel, founding the garage-rock band Monotonix in 2005. After dismantling in 2011, he ventured out on his own and released his first solo EP, Iberian Passage in 2014. Gat’s musicianship and stage presence have earned him consistent acclaim from Spin magazine, Time Out New York, and The Village Voice who named him as New York City’s best guitarist in 2013.

Yonatan Gat will appear at Ace of Cups, 2619 North High Street, on Thursday. March 24 at 8:00 pm as part of the “Sick Weekend 2016” concert series. Tickets are $33.00 for three days’ admission to the series and are available here. A limited number of single-night tickets will be available at the venue day-of.
