Yoga At The Yard Opens in Grandview

“Here comes the sun!” says Alyson Sullivan, owner of Yoga At The Yard in Grandview, with a big smile on her face during her 7:30 AM class recently. She has many reasons to be smiling. Sullivan and her support team of family, friends, and teachers, have made a fine place to do yoga in the Grandview Yard area.

“This was a dream, then a plan, then a lot of setbacks, and now it’s here,” she says.

Located at the corner of Goodale and Northwest in Grandview, Sullivan has created a clean practice room in a basement studio with some nice amenities. Natural lighting is a rarity in the Columbus yoga scene, yet Yoga at the Yard (YATY) has four good-sized windows that let in lots of sun or ambient light (note: the pictures on the website are not of the current practice space) into the classroom. These east-facing windows make Yoga at the Yard one of the best places in Columbus to do sunrise yoga. It was very pleasant to take a morning class at YATY, watch the sunrise, and see little birds hopping around outside the windows.

There are a variety of classes at YATY ranging from slow, intense stretching to hot and fast power flows. There is even a men-only class called “Grunt and Groan.” The instructors are enthusiastic and helpful. Sullivan has a number of very experienced teachers, such as Sally Walsh Roberts, on her staff, as well as new teachers from the Yoga on High Teacher Training Institute. Watching former dancer Mira Lowenstein float gracefully in a class is great fun. Michael Cahill and Jackie Theibert have powerful practices and do helpful adjustments. At every class that I took, the instructor asked for requests and made sure that everyone from beginner to “pro” had a good time.

It is apparent that Sullivan loves socializing with her students at YATY. She calendars yoga classes followed by wine and cheese regularly. Yoga at the YATY is often a family affair, too. Not only do Sullivan’s husband and daughter practice there but also she has a class for couples, “Sweat and Swig” which is hot yoga followed by a moderate amount of beer (for those over 21).

Yoga at the Yard has a cozy lobby with ample hooks and cubby holes to stash your things, as well as lockers. A nifty Oasis water dispenser puts out chilled, regular, and hot water for free. Mats and towels are also loaned at no charge. There are two changing small areas in the lobby. A clean bathroom is inside the studio, and shower facilities are available. The practice room is acoustically bright, and instructors play music of their choice. I particularly enjoyed Sullivan’s selection of Beatle’s covers one Saturday morning. There is generous off-street parking in 2 lots adjacent to the building and one lot across Goodale.

Yoga at the Yard is currently running a new student special of 3 classes for $25.

Yoga at the Yard is located at 751 Northwest Blvd., Grandview, OH 43212. For more information, visit yogaattheyard.com.
