Yeah Me Too…. Coffee

By:

Clintonville

No Phone

No Website

Monday to Saturday

7 AM to 6 PM

Yeah Me Too is a very small coffee shop in Clintonville. If the place had a motto – it would be: just coffee – no perks and no pretense. I don’t really drink coffee but all of my friends have raved about this simple shop for over a year. YMT sells four types of coffee to take home to your coffee machine and usually has one type available to drink when you drop in. There is no place to sit, no Wi Fi, no gimmicks, no frills – just coffee. Everything is simple – hence no phone, no web site, no marketing – they just sell coffee. There may be a few baked goods from Pattycake Vegan Bakery and/or Wellness Forum Foods (Del Sroufe) in case you need a snack as you head out the door but that is more of an afterthought – maybe even a public service.

Thats fair for good flavored roasts.

Their coffee is flavored?? As in, some sort of hazelnut flavoring or something? I have a hard time imagining hard-core java fiends doing that…. Or did you just mean “good coffee”? (Anyone know what kinds of beans, other than Sumatra, they roast?)

Just for the record, it’s not flavored, just has a good flavor. Their coffee is really great. They roast it for whatever is best for the terroir of the bean. They have a rotating stock from all coffee regions. Highly recommended.

Really. I almost never see coffeeshops with rotating stocks; they usually grab a few varietals, or come up with a blend, and stick with it. That’s really striking. And if they’re as coffee-crazy as everyone seems to be saying, I’m guessing this rotation is based on new and/or interesting arrivals, as in, it was a good harvest for Ethiopian Harrar this year and we got some in — that sort of thing?

I’ve got to meet these guys and drink their coffee. Funny, it’s actually the second time tonight that they’ve been recommended to me. A shame they’re so far north.

  • I just went there for the first time since moving to the neighborhood – paid $13 a pound for a nice Sumatra. So much for $12. Considering it might be the best coffee I’ve ever tasted (no exaggeration), I’m not going to complain. They have my business.

Still don’t understand why they wouldn’t have a web presence – that’s so easy and costs little to nothing to put up/administer. Would that be “selling out” in some way? Weird.

  • anyone know what is the nearest cross street?

  • cool, maybe just behind the quikEmart. was just at Studio35 Friday night, but I didn’t see the coffee place.

lemme see, there’s the Studio35, Bowling Pro-shop, irish dancing school, frame gallery, pizza shop.

Must have just missed it. i live right close and pass it at least 2xs daily. guess my eyes aren’t open while driving

  • maybe there’s a pain in the ass factor as far as having a website they don’t want?

  • Lifeliberty, you were so very close…just south of the dry cleaners, which as I recall is just south of everything you just mentioned.

  • There is a parking lot between the dry cleaners and Yeah, Me Too.

It is easy to find when you are on a bike …

  • Just drove up there today for the second time. Their coffee is indeed pretty terrific, and they seem like coffee geeks through and through. I had a Kenya both times I went; the first time it was the best Kenya I’ve ever had — they managed to get a little sweetness out of it, which I thought was kind of a neat trick. A hard balance to strike. Today’s Kenya was a shade darker, a little less sweet, but still very good.

I also got a chance to talk to Sam a fair bit and find out a little about the business. They do rotate their beans, but generally every four months or so. They also sell green beans for $6-7 a pound, which beats the mail-order price (just over $8 when you factor in shipping), and they’ve got a medium-sized selection (maybe 7 or 8 different varietals, but ones that I happen to like). And they love to talk coffee. Sam’s a Sumatra fan like I am, and they roast their Sumatra fairly dark (full city or a little over), which is the norm for Sumatra, but he says that when he roasts it for himself, he makes a lighter roast. I like the regular Sumatra roast so it never occurred to me to try a lighter roast, but now I will.

I’m afraid that if they were located in the Short North I’d never leave. :)

  • I stopped in for the first time over the weekend. They are very friendly and welcoming. Very good cup of coffee for the same price you would pay anywhere these days. I don’t drink coffee often but when I do I will be getting it from Yeah, Me Too

Actually, I forgot to mention that — but what they charge for a cup of coffee seemed to me to be almost a little bit less than what you pay at some other places. I forget exactly what a large cup cost, exactly, but it’s totally reasonable.

  • Yeh I have been getting their coffee beans regularly for the last 4 years, good beans! The best part of the place is the story behind the name, now that is a reason to buy coffee at this place!

  • I forgot to mention a bit of trivia that I gleaned — both of them, I gather, worked for Tom and Maria of Sweet Maria’s back when Sweet Maria’s was based in Columbus.

I asked why they don’t get into roasting coffee commercially, for local businesses, and I have to say I loved the answer that I got: part of the reason is that they’re not zoned to roast that much coffee (fair enough), and part of the reason is, if they did that, they couldn’t just close up shop and take off for a week whenever they felt like it.

My dad, for one, would have said they’re nuts for not squeezing a business opportunity for every cent that it’s worth. Me, I tend to think they’ve got their heads screwed on straight.

  • If i’m not mistaken, Sam Brown, one of the owners, is the same Sam Brown from The Sun.

Is this true? Regardless, I need to stop in and get some beans.

  • Just bumping these guys to remind folks that they exist. Went there this morning to see what they were brewing — a Nicaraguan bean, turns out. This one hit me the same way as the first Kenya I tried there: they’re doing something in the roasting process that really brings out the sweetness in the coffee, to a degree I’ve never experienced before. It’s not just avoiding a darker roast, and it’s not just the absence of bitterness. It’s like they’re emphasizing the sugars in the beans without fully caramelizing them somehow. I’d guess it has to do with the roasting profile — the graph relating time to temperature during the roasting process; changing the shape of the roasting profile can have a dramatic impact on the flavor of the coffee even if the degree of roast remains the same. So I bet it’s something like that, but I really don’t know. Regardless — damn good coffee.

That’s so funny, after a late northside meeting last night I went by and they had just closed. I promise I’ll be back, I love every single thing I’ve heard about this little store. It warrants a special trip since every single time I’m in the ‘hood they are closed (my fault not theirs).

Bear: Your science sounds spot-on, although a little like explaining good sex using charts and graphs. I tend toward Vienna roast but often wish there was something a bit rounder/sweeter and sounds like with their deft hand, YM2 may have found it.
