John Wirtz has posted up a question on the local transportation blog Xing Columbus, and he wants to know if your commute sucks, and if so… why does it suck? The question has been recently posed nationally with a new online campaign rolled out by the Transportation for America group, which as John notes, seems to mostly be an outlet for people to vent frustrations in a system that they’ve been subscribing to for years.
Instead of spending all of your energy trying to affect policy and legislation, what John is asking via Xing is for people to attempt to vote with your feet. Try to make life choices with transportation options in mind. It’s easier said than done, but living closer to work, or working closer to home is the number one way to make that commute suck a little bit less.

Definitely much easier said than done, but I think it’s just a matter of personal priorities. Most people will put school districts, spouse’s commutes, fear of “urban crime,” owning newly constructed home, or other factors ahead of their own commute. If transportation were everyone’s number one priority, we wouldn’t keep getting as much sprawl. But some people actually prefer sprawl.
There are some people, like me, who chose to live in the city but the only job I could get was in the suburbs. Both my boyfriend and I commute from the city out to the suburbs each day. The sprawl also means some companies chosing to move to the suburbs because of larger office space with lower rent.
Pretty easy 7 minutes and just side streets. suburb to suburb commute. As stated earlier jobs are spread out throughout the region. Tough to make mass transit work for that, but for future growth rail certainly can be used.
I only live a little over a mile from work, so it’s hardly a commute at all. Shortness of commute was one of the big things I had in mind when I was house shopping last fall.
My big complaint is that I would like to be able to walk to work, but my office is on Dublin Rd., which is so ped-unfriendly (no sidewalks, limited places to cross, very fast traffic).
About 12 minutes, straight shot from Hudson/Summit down to Main Street. It’s a very relaxed commute. I love not having to get on the freeway.
I think we did a poll one time to see who had the longest commute. ;) Can’t remember who won, but I do know a few people who spend over an hour each way in the car every day. I don’t think I could ever handle that.
I drove to Easton last night after work to pick up something at Crate & Barrel. I can’t imagine having to make that drive every single day in rush hour traffic. And that’s not even that long of a drive.
I drive 4 days a week to Chillicothe and one day a week to Piketon, OH. Put that in yer google maps and smoke it.
It’s actually not that bad though…I get home at the same time I used to when I worked in Columbus and very very rarely hit any traffic snarls.
i walk 15 minutes to work. GV to downtown. my wife also walks some days as she’s very close as well. i do drive out to dublin after work each week for soccer, and i absolutely hate it. i can’t believe that people deal with that every day in this city. personally, i would work late everyday to avoid that since rush hour is only about 30 minutes long here anyhow.
