A construction kickoff event is scheduled today at the southwest corner of East Broad Street and Hamilton Road in Whitehall. City officials and representatives of the Central Ohio Community Improvement Corporation and the Ohio Housing Finance Agency will be on hand to celebrate the start of work on a 20-acre mixed-use development.

The project, which was announced last fall, will feature 360 residential units as well as a restaurant, community center, multiple office buildings, and a large central green space. It will replace an aging apartment complex called the Commons at Royal Landing.

The City of Whitehall purchased the site last year and selected Continental Real Estate to redevelop it.

A press release called the new development, dubbed Norton Crossing, “the largest residential demolition effort in the county and the most significant redevelopment effort in Whitehall’s history.”

Following demolition of the existing buildings, construction work will begin in the spring, with the first buildings going vertical next summer. The project will not be broken up into phases, so the plan is for the entire development to open in the fall of 2019.
