The Create Columbus Commission announced on Thursday that they are awarding a $10,000 grant to a group called Columbus Inspires to “design, build and install an iconic city landmark in the heart of the city that will elevate the Columbus brand throughout the region and across the world.”

“I’m happy to share that we are working in partnership with Betsy Pandora and the Short North Alliance on this effort to fund an iconic public art piece in the heart of the Short North Arts District,” said Derek Grosso, who sits on the board of Columbus Inspires and is also the president of the Columbus Young Professionals Club.

Grosso said that the group plans to start a crowdfunding site this fall to raise additional funds for the project. The goal is to raise  a total of $100,000, but $50,000 has already been pledged to the effort from the Ingram-White Castle Foundation and the developer of the White Castle site, Borror Properties.

The crowdfunding campaign will “invite area young professionals – and really anyone who has an interest – to get involved in making a donation to this exciting concept for Columbus,” said Grosso. “In addition to the actual fundraising, I believe this initiative will also inspire people of Columbus to think more – or to think bigger – about investing in public art throughout our city.”

Although details about what the art might look like or exactly where it would be positioned have yet to be released, Jeff Baur of Borror Properties said that “the sculpture will be submitted to the Victorian Village Commission for approval in the coming months.”

Borror Properties is also collaborating with the Short North Alliance on a plan to incorporate public art into their new development at 848 North Pearl Street.
