When the Rubber Hits the Road
Will the Short North’s new bicycle bollards really help bikers?
by Jennifer Hambrick
February 2008
Six of the bollards – galvanized posts specially designed for bicycle parking – have already been installed at the City parking lot at 709 N. High St., a dozen have been installed where some side streets intersect with High Street, four will be placed at Italian Village Park and the remainder will be installed in Goodale Park.
Zach Henkel, host of WCRS’ local cycling program, Cranksters, is skeptical that the bollards will be convenient enough for bikers.
“Cyclists tend to want to lock their vehicle as close to within view to where they’ll be as possible, so if they happen to put one of these bollards right next to the gazebo (in Goodale Park) and the cyclist will be at the gazebo, then they might use it, but they’re not going to lock up their bike at one end of the park and go all the way across the park to the gazebo,” Henkel said.

Congrats dude. You are the real American dream!
I mean, parking meters, signposts, etc…aren’t they all city-owned. If it’s ok to ATTACH my bike to city property, hell, Ima start parking my CAR on teh sidewalk. How convenient would that be? you just lost my support for your city council bid  I was joking also. In all honesty though, I had my bike parked on a bollard at the Statehouse and they cut my lock  I guess those are only decorative or for horses. I was planning a protest of getting a horse and putting it on the bollard and letting it crap there all day. Maybe an ass. On March 4th, I’ll ride an ass down high street with a sign saying “honk if you are an ass,” then hitch it to a bollard at the statehouse. I would love to see the Ohio Highway Patrol confiscate my ass.
I have seen Mercurious’ ass. Maybe I am a little bi-Mercurious. No?
Other than Mercurious and ARH, no one here posting has much of a clue of what this article is talking about or the situation. It is a silly article about an unimportant issue.
How about that Kryptonite NY Chain lock?
Those are bad ass…saw proof, bolt cutter proof, etc.
That wasn’t at all elitist. Can you explain the issue to us?
I also had a nice kryptonite bike lock (people should only use U-locks as far as i’m concerned now) that didn’t prevent my bicycle (my only mode of transport) from getting stolen. I certainly am not against parking my bicycle at a bollard and walking to my destination, but if there’s a handy parking meter or signpost directly in front of where i’m going to be, i’m going to use it, and i’ll feel alot better about it while i’m there. I can’t afford to have two bikes stolen.
like that sweet bike tree in front of my old house on Hamlet St. The tree in front of my new house is even better as a bike tree!
those two topics are apples and oranges.
we already worked (physically) to get to where we are going.
and bicycles, by their nature, can be locked to shit like parking meters and signposts and not really be in the way because they are SMALL.
if you don’t want to deal with parking you should ride a bike. it’s one of my favorite things about not having a car.
Just saw this. I love you and parking my bike on trees and fences.

Hollller!
I can’t believe the two are being compared. Sure – it’s convenient to get back at the Cyclist (and surely he loves getting fired up and pissing people off with brash commentary) – but when it comes down to it, bikes are easy to park anywhere. They are also lightweight – meaning they’re easier to steal than a scooter and they definitely should be in your line of vision whenever possible. Bike parking is great! If you want to park close to where you are going – get a bike. It really only seems lazy cause less walking is involved. But, oh yeah – riding a bike involves physical labor….. riiiiight. That would be the difference. Small convenient vehicle + man-power = Princess Parking…anywhere.
Oh – and for the people who hate Tip Top parking…since that is really off topic, but it seems the moderator felt it was okay to pull into this BIKING thread – the cook I work with parks on Long St, just past 5th. No meters, no “No Parking” signs, no valets. And a 5 minute walk to help that pot roast digest!
What’s the big deal about parking on a side street bollard and walking to your destination? That article read to me: “I’m lazy, I want to park directly in front of my destination and I dererve that because I’m an elitist bicyclist.”
I like to park my motorcycle where I can see it. cycles, whether motorized or not, are easy to mess with/steal parts off of/have people sit on them to try them out for size/ etc etc.
whenever I eat somewhere I try for a close spot out front and sit by the restaurant window. not always, but that situation is ideal.
Those are bad ass…saw proof, bolt cutter proof, etc.
those are breakable in under a minute, there’s vids on utube showing them cut. and the ny chain is heavy as hell, I wouldn’t want to bike around with it.
but yes, insurance is your best defense/offense against theft.
there is no lock that can’t be broken.

cut with what exactly?
they’re six pounds – i suppose thats a tad weighty for a bike, but function over form in this instance!

i also think the same should apply for motorcycles and scooters. they should be allowed to park on sidwalks as long as they don’t impede foot traffic, and more than one bike should be allowed per metered parking to allow more spaces for cars.
I think for things like this to come to frutition everyone should ride a motorcycle or car and park one bike per space and take up all the spaces. once people see all the unused space the city might come up with motorcycle parking to help with traffic congestion.
but as it stands no columbus is very unfriendly to motorcycle, most parking decks don’t allow them.
cut with bolt cutters, about 4 foot long bolt cutters. I’ll try to find the vids
some chains http://www.lockitt.com/chain.htm
then there is this http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/17/nyregion/17lock.html?ex=…=5090&partner=rssuserland

I just searched and couldn’t find any vids cutting a ny chain.
damn you are impatient  give me a sec

most sites I want to view are ‘websensed”/blocked
If someone wants to work hard enough to cut my chain – so be it. It really just buys you some time. It’s more likely that someone would just steal my tire. The idea is – if I park it on High St. in front of the window I am sitting in – I can prevent that. And even if I am in the bathroom or something – it’s in broad daylight on the busiest foot-traffic street in town. Bikes get messed with when they are parked away from people for long periods of time – looking like they are abandoned.
I think scooters should be allowed to park on some sidewalks – it’s hard though, they are considerably wider. And obviously a Harley is too big. I’m an advocate for motorbike parking spots – or just putting multiple bikes in one spot. But, I can see how the motorbike on the sidewalk could get in the way of pedestrians. – I always try to make sure my bike is as out of the way as possible from foot and vehicular traffic – while still being in the middle of it all – it’s pretty easy!

here’s a response of kryptonite about the vids out there.
I will say that the chain is one of the best, just not unbeatable
