Will the Short North’s new bicycle bollards really help bikers?

by Jennifer Hambrick

February 2008

Six of the bollards – galvanized posts specially designed for bicycle parking – have already been installed at the City parking lot at 709 N. High St., a dozen have been installed where some side streets intersect with High Street, four will be placed at Italian Village Park and the remainder will be installed in Goodale Park.

Zach Henkel, host of WCRS’ local cycling program, Cranksters, is skeptical that the bollards will be convenient enough for bikers.

“Cyclists tend to want to lock their vehicle as close to within view to where they’ll be as possible, so if they happen to put one of these bollards right next to the gazebo (in Goodale Park) and the cyclist will be at the gazebo, then they might use it, but they’re not going to lock up their bike at one end of the park and go all the way across the park to the gazebo,” Henkel said.

  • There is a plethora of bike parking in the Short North. Posts aplenty… lamp post, sign post, meter post. I love locking to parking meters for free. I love my life! It is great yeahhhhh! I love lachewla too!

  • youve still got a week until you have to plug for valentines day p.s.

  • Besides the bicyclists themselves, who cares how “convenient” bicycle parking is in the short north ON high street?

What’s the big deal about parking on a side street bollard and walking to your destination? That article read to me: “I’m lazy, I want to park directly in front of my destination and I dererve that because I’m an elitist bicyclist.”

  • Yes bicyclists are very lazy. She fogot to mention when I was interviewed that we park within view for security reasons. I can not affford to have my ride stolen, and neither can a lot of the bike kids.

Isn’t that what quality bike locks are for?

What about bicycle insurance? You could certainly up your homeowners or renters insurance to cover your bicycle.

  • yeah, the only thing about it is i want to be able to see my bike wherever i park it. i don’t need my shit getting stolen.

  • So byciclists are poor and lazy?

Aren’t you supposed to be an cycling advocate?

  • Locks get broken.

I do not even have insurance to get upped!

No I am not a cycling advocate. I will help and assist folks to get on a bike if they ask, but I do not personally care if they do or do not. It is a free country. It is not some facist place like France or Saudi Arabia where the gubment tells you what to do!

I am a host of a cycling radio show though!

i don’t need my stuff stolen either, no body does. does that mean i feel like that wherever i go in the short north on my scooter that i should have a right to be able to park it in plain view? no.

  • No, cyclists do not have the right to park in plain view, but we do have abundant oppurtunities to park in plain view. And we do take advantage of them! Thus bike bollards are silly and misapplied!

    quality locks don’t.

    renters insurance is CHEAP.

    you can negotiate the rate.

you can pick your own deductible.

if i had an expensive bicycle that i cared about and was wary of theft, i would absolutely get it covered. it’s common sense really.

Wow…I didn’t know advocates were akin to fascists. :?

I’ve never listened to your show, but what is your motivation for running the show? Money?

  • Where does it say in the constitution that cyclists have a right to a place to park their bikes?

I mean, parking meters, signposts, etc…aren’t they all city-owned. If it’s ok to ATTACH my bike to city property, hell, Ima start parking my CAR on teh sidewalk. How convenient would that be?

Actually TWO motorcycles, as well as truck and scooter. All paid off with titles in hand.

Hard work makes this possible, not a high salary.
