What’s New at the Ohio State Fair This Year

There are certain things that everyone looks forward to every year at the Ohio State Fair… the deep fried food-on-a-stick, the butter sculptures, the fireworks, and of course, the people watching. While these staples might usually be enough to lure you out to the fairgrounds, perhaps you’re on the fence this year and looking for some sort of new experience.

It’s often overshadowed by the aforementioned traditions, but every year the Ohio State Fair always brings in an assorted handful of one-off exhibitions and events that can prove to be just as entertaining. Here’s our quick list of the top five new things you shouldn’t miss at this year’s Ohio State Fair.

5. The Columbus Radio Control Racing Club Fair Shootout - Folks from around the state will converge on the fairgrounds for a few days to compete in some intense radio-controlled racing. The practice rounds take place on Friday, July 31st, and actual races take place on August 1st and 2nd. More information can be found at www.crcrc.com.

4. Earth Block Demonstration - A “100 percent sustainable home” will be constructed on site as a part of a demonstration done by a company specializing in the creation of “Earth Blocks“, a building material made of hydraulically compressed soil.

3. Cupcakes Galore - Homemade cupcakes will be entered for a competition, and cupcake cooking demonstrations will also be provided.

2. The Ohio Roller Girls - On Saturday, August 8th, The Ohio Roller Girls will join four other Ohio women’s derby leagues to play in six exhibition matchups. There is no extra charge for the event, and it will take place in the Show Place Pavilion starting at noon. More details can be found at OhioRollerGirls.com.

1. World Championship Mutton Bustin’ - This event has a strange name, but all you really need to know is that it’s pretty much a children’s version of bull riding, except with sheep. That’s right. If you need any reason to drag yourself out of your house this year and make it down to the fairgrounds, then this is it. Do it for the children:

There are all kinds of things wrong with Mutton Busting, but it looks more entertaining than the pig races!

I’m excited for the fair this year. I’ve already decided I want some french fries with malt vinegar. Not sure what else yet!

OHRG actually did this at the fair last year too, but it was a bit smaller since we were relegated to a weekday. A weekend means we will have tons of skaters there, from all over the state of Ohio.

Columbus Craft Cotillion is hosting a craft fair the same day. The giant slide is just about equidistant from our venues, so that’s all the things I like to do at the fair all in one. :)

Sounds like a fancy name for ‘brick’

Read an article in some magazine about a home designer who was not using stone in any houses.  He pontificated about the irresponsible use of non-renewable resources.

    It’s stone.
We got plenty on this rock.

I sincerely hope that Mutton Busting won’t replace monkeys riding dogs. Maybe they should have a monkey riding a kid riding a sheep. Meta-Busting!

I think Desi is going to be big enough to go down the giant slide this year in my lap. Really looking forward to that next week! :D

Does anyone know where you should enter if you ride your bike?

    Walker Says:

I imagine any entrance is fine. Are you talking about bringing your bike with you inside, or chaining it up to the inside of the outer fence?
