What stores would you like to see in Columbus?

By: Walker

Yeah, Columbus already has more retail space per capita than it needs, but there are a few shopping destinations that are missing. I know plenty of people have mentioned that it would be nice to have an Ikea in town. I’d like to see a few more cool mens clothing stores (or ones that cater to both sexes) like H&M and Mexx. What else do you want to see?

More clothing stores? More electronics stores? More grocery/food stores? More home/furniture stores?

  • Another fun paper store would be cool. Paper Source is pretty neat.

    Second to an H&M!

I’d like to see more stores open as shops instead of inside a mall. I think it would be neat to have streets of storefronts of cool shops instead of having to go to a specific mall just to shop.

  • I agree with Anne, more individual stores. I would love to see ground level retail shops, service stores and groceries throughout downtown. Places like that should help boost downtown residency. I know there is the whole chicken and egg thing with that, but you asked for what I want.

Build it and they will come

  • There is no excuse why Columbus does not have the following stores:

    Ikea (Pittsburgh)

    Kenneth Cole (Cincy)

    Club Monaco (Detroit)

    H&M (Clevleand)

Expo Design Center (Home Depot interior store – Cleveland)

    Room & Board

    Tiffany(Cincy)

Some others I’m rooting for, but it’s a pipe dream

    Hugo Boss

    Mexx

    Donald Pliner (shoes)

    Neiman Marcus

    Cartier

Columbus is starting to turn the corner in a retail-sense, with Crate & Barrel and Design Within Reach coming in. Hopefully we can ride the wave a little longer.

  • some stores columbus needs:

neiman marcus(i heard the limited is possibly buying them)

    another saks(at city center)

bloomingdales(city center or a free standing store downtown)

louis vuitton(richmond,va has its own freestanding store)

gucci(city center used to have one)

tiffanys(if cincy has one, columbus should have one)

kenneth cole, h&m, ikea, dkny, club monaco

barneys(would be nice, but not likely, but who knows)

chanel(if not the clothes, then one for accessories, etc.. and the only one in the midwest, besides chicago)

hugo boss(atlanta has one, and i think detroit does)

    hermes

prada(just for the accessories and shoes)

and any other anyone else can think of

if none of these stores are at city center, polaris, easton, etc…, then i like the idea of them being free standing stores downtown.

im sure that columbus can get these stores. but who could we write to so are opinions can be heard? thanks

Well, I’ve been thinking about starting a little online petition for Ikea, since people have expressed interest in it (and i’ve seen Ikea petitions for other cities), but I figured I’d check to see if there was something else that people wanted more. I figured Ikea is probably the best since it’s a pretty versatile store that has more appeal to a wider crowd here in town than any of the others.

Thanks for all of the input on this so far. I’m impressed to see so much interest in a variety of stores that we’re missing out on. ;)

  • Walker,

The online petition for Ikea is a great idea. Anything to gin up support to bring that store to our area would be a positive step. Ikea is extremely methodical in choosing locations. I think it would be important to land it right away as I feel there would be a slim to none chance they put 2 locations in Ohio in the near future. The local demographics help us (young), but the population within in an hour’s drive is inferior compared to Cleveland and Cincy. We’ll see.

Also there is an Ikea Ohio blog site, and Columbus leads in it’s poll of where the Ikea location in Ohio should be located.

Yeah, I’ve looked at that site, but it’s been awhile. I’ll see if I can put something together for a petition in the next few days and i’ll post a link here. Hopefully we’ll have enough people to help spread the word on this. ;)

  • I heard they are bringing an H&M to Tuttle…..

  • dd,

Out of curiosity, when and where did you hear the H&M news?

    Great news if it happens

  • i want more record stores that sell vinyl.

  • that would be sweet if they do open an h&m here in columbus! would this be the first one in the state?

  • i went to the h&m site and when i was looking at the new store openings section, it said that a store is opening at tuttle crossing this fall! another location is opening at cracker park in cleveland.(i think they meant crocker park  ) only if they could open one at city center. that would be a great location to serve the yuppie and guppie class of downtown, the short north, victorian village, italian village, campus, german village, the brewery district, olde towne east, and grandview heights!

  • yea, my girlfriend works in the mall and she told me about it. She told me they were going to combine two store spaces to make one big store.

  • speaking of shopping, columbus has a store that no other city in ohio has.(i also believe it is the only other one in the midwest outside of chicago) for instance, we have a very expensive luxury home goods store called clive christian(which sells furniture to very rich people with good taste). if columbus can have a store like this, why cant we have a gucci, prada, hermes, hugo boss, neiman marcus, etc…. we should get stores like these before any other city in ohio does or in the the tri-state area.

  • I think having these stores available in Columbus is nice, but they are all out in the suburbs. If a good number were downtown that would be great. Ideally, they would line the streets instead of being in a mall like City Center, which has a lackluster atmosphere. I wish we had series of plazas connected by pedestrian only streets lined with shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

  • Oh yes, I would like a Zara clothing store over here, but if Chicago doesn’t even have one, we probably won’t.

  • i hope the citizens of columbus and the downtown commission can/will attract these types of tenents. im know that columbus can. we have the upwardly mobile type of people(middle class and the upper class) to support these types of stores, more so than cities like cleveland and cincinnati. i think that these tenents will be attracted by the development that columbus is having and the types of people that want these stores.

We also have the only Henri Bendel store outside of NYC.
