MichaelPaull wrote I like the idea of putting this stuff closer to the hands of college students (see this report), but I don't like the single-source aspect of this. I hope the 'other' store in CC opens up soon.

I think they're looking at November as a likely opening for the other computer store... but that's far enough out that things could always change in the interim as well.

In the meantime, OSU does have "Prime Supplier" agreements with Dell, HP, and Lenovo that students, faculty & staff can use for personal purchases online, starting from ibuy.osu.edu (though an OSU login is required to actually get to the vendor lists and such).

I've reflected on this post for a couple of days now. I am increasingly unhappy with Apple. I think we are at a stage in the adoption of all this great new mobile computing technology where we are just starting to get our heads around the possibilities but are very prone to getting locked into inovation-stifling regimes, and Apple is starting to look increasingly like that. Consider that the iPhone introduces a bunch of proprietary scripting stuff onto designers a la IE4. Consider that the iPod all but requires iTunes on your computer (I'm losing hair trying to get it working nicely under linux so I can go completely windows free) and defaults to a proprietary format. I could go on.

Consider that much of the hoopla around the iPhone is based on its design - which is really getting so so reviews from people who've already bought one - and it really isn't any better than cheaper alternatives without the hoopla.

When a company uses savvy marketing and slick design to ride one or two breakthroughs to a position of innovation and open-standard stifling dominance for years to follow, I don't care how cool or uncool the CEO is, it's bad.

I like the idea of putting this stuff closer to the hands of college students (see this report), but I don't like the single-source aspect of this.

chaptal wrote This is an exciting development. Wonder what the OSU staff discount on software is? I can use the new iLife suite.

It's just their standard education discount, which you can peruse through the online Apple Store for Education.

Discounts are always a good thing (especially on Apple products, since they start high to begin with), but it's nothing Earth-shattering.

Yeah, I heard that deal was probably happening. I am really happy for them. I don't know how many of you have been to the Wexner Store. I assume driving foot traffic in was the driving force behind this. Its one of the best retail stores in the city hands down. Matt does a fantastic job. Oh yeah, and they carry us..
