For the third year — and with an expanded schedule — the Scioto River will be fired up this summer for nighttime entertainment. WaterFire, a string of wood-fueled bonfires in the middle of the river, will return beginning May 3 with eight events — the first year for a “full schedule,” project director Mike Collins said.

Throughout summer, WaterFire will pair with entertainment, including a Rhythm on the River performance featuring BalletMet Columbus (Aug. 29); the German Village Oktoberfest (Sept. 7); and the Riverfront Arts Festival, formerly the Goodale Park Art Festival (Sept. 20).

  • that’s great to hear- and better that it is pairing up with some existing planned events.

  • I always thought burning the Santa Maria would be a good “special night” for WaterFire. The city could also sell the option to shoot a flaming arrow at the ship for $5 each to support street cars (a better means of transportation). It would be memorable.

  • A CU meet-up for one of these?

    A.

  • Not to be a Debby Downer or anything, but WaterFire has never struck me as the most environmentally friendly summer event series.

  • Very cool. I’m glad to see they’re using it as a backdrop rather than an an event all by itself. Might actually get me to see the ballet.

  • i wish they would just leave them lit all spring, summer and fall for those who don’t go to the events and are just passing by. sort of like what providence RI does.

    i agree times 3!

    Sounds like a plan! :D

I’m sure we can get together some sort of groups to go to all three of the festival events with WaterFire going on in the background:

    - BalletMet Columbus (Aug. 29)

    - German Village Oktoberfest (Sept. 7)

    - Riverfront Arts Festival (formerly the Goodale Park Art Festival) (Sept. 20)

    Mark your calendars!

Not to be morbid…but that would be the most amazing funeral ever. Put your body on the Santa Maria, light it on fire, and set it adrift…until it got hung up on the Broad Street Bridge and caused a huge fiery disaster. Perfect.

I don’t know what the logistics are – I assume we just stake out a spot somewhere like Red, White and Boom.

If it is feasible, I volunteer to cater one of them. Not sure of my travel schedule for late Summer/Fal, but I will put together a spread for one.

If only there were a Serpent canopy on the bridge to ignite as well.

    hahahaha!

I remember that proposal. It’s comforting to know that there’s still architects out there who use drugs.

I think it would have been fantastic.

I know the guy. Artist, not architect. His son’s soccer team beat my son’s this morning.

Tremendous! Unfortunately it was probably too “out there” to fly in the states. Or at least it seems like something you would see in Europe.

That does give me an idea for an art project though…

Yeah, if MNR could carry some oxyactylene torches, iron rods and 750m of red canvas …

  • oh god i remember that. that would have been terrible. TACKY

  • That was Todd Slaughter’s Blue Serpent design, right? I thought it was gorgeous, but there were some practical problems. Bits of glass overhead totally freaked out the county engineer and he died.

Todd must be in his mid/late 60s, so maybe those are his grandchildren in soccer.

Yes to Todd. No to Grandchildren.

The idea also got short shrift because around the same time, the balcony on his house collapsed due to a house-guest who held a party and had too many people on it. As you can imagine, the negativity brigade in Columbus had a field day with that one.

  • i work next to north bank park and can park for free! carpooling anyone?

a question though… i tried to go on the website, and i just don’t GET it…

the words “water” and “fire” were used every other word. i just felt tempted to say sarcastically, “um, ok… let me get this straight…so there’s water… AND FIRE?!”

All I could gather from the boring Angela Pace video was people in boats w/torches, and music playing…
