Trailer Roundup: Snowden, Weiner & More

From biopics to documentaries, and first person shooters to Netflix binge watching. You want to know what’s coming soon, and that’s what “Trailer Roundup” provides each week for our pop-culture and multimedia-savvy readers. Here’s the latest and greatest:

    Snowden

Prolific filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the big screen this year with Snowden, an action-laden biopic about Edward Snowden, the former CIA employee turned whistleblower/traitor (depending upon your perspective) and exposed massive US government secrets to the world. Stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In theaters on September 16th.

    Weiner

On the flip side of the spectrum, IFC is releasing a new documentary on Anthony Weiner, the former New York Congressman who was at the center of a sexting scandal in 2011. The doc follows Weiner during his unsuccessful 2013 mayoral bid, and the trailer’s glimpse behind the scenes makes the process look chaotic at best. The doc hits theaters on May 20th.

    Vice Principals

A second teaser for new HBO series Vice Principals showcases Danny McBride in all of his Danny McBride glory. If you want to see some terrible people going to war, then this could be your new comedy for 2016. Airs in July.

    The Nice Guys

This upcoming dark comedy is set in the 70s, and while it already got a normal trailer, it’s only fitting that it also got a decade-appropriate trailer redux. Starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. In theaters on May 20th.

    Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

The fifth installment in the Deus Ex video game franchise will be released later this year. Known for a genre blend of action, role playing and stealth, the new game continues the cyberpunk story in the year 2029. The game is slated for release on August 29th for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

    Uncle Buck

The 1989 comedy classic starring John Candy is being rebooted into a new tv series on ABC. Comedian Mike Epps takes on the titular role, helping the kids learn about prostitutes, twerking, and police brutality — hopefully with a laugh track to accompany everything. Series premieres on June 14th.

    Tulip Fever

A young woman marries an old man, but falls in love with a young artist. The story isn’t new ground, but the caliber of actors (Judi Dench, Christoph Waltz) combined with the setting (17th Century Amsterdam) make it look like Oscar material. Oh, it also has Zach Galifianakis in it too. In theaters on July 15th.

    Captain Fantastic

Viggo Mortensen stars in this heartwarming tale of an off-the-grid family drama that turns into a battle of city-versus-nature when extended family fights for control of the children being raised in the woods. Coming to theaters in July.

    Cell

In 2007, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson starred in 1408, a film based on a Stephen King short story. In 2016, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson star in Cell, a film based on a Stephen King novel. As the story goes, humanity is turned zombified by their cell phones (get it? GET IT?!?) and it’s up to a small group of non-phone-users to navigate the post apocalyptic world to save loved ones. In theaters (and simultaneous digital download) on July 8th.

    The Duel

A year in film wouldn’t be complete without at least a western or two, and this year you can tune into The Duel, a new story about a Sheriff working on solving a case that ends up having ties to personal vengeance. The film stars Liam Hemsworth, who looks like he’ll be completely overshadowed by a villanous Woody Harrelson.

    Batman: The Killing Joke

Fans of Alan Moore’s 1988 The Killing Joke graphic novel will be excited about this year’s release of an R-rated animated retelling of the dark and twisted story. Fans of Batman: The Animated Series will also be pleased to hear Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their roles as Batman and Joker respectively. Heading straight to video later this summer.

    X-Men: Apocalypse

If you’re not sick of seeing trailers for X-Men yet, then here’s the final one for Apocalypse, which finally arrives in theaters on May 27th. Not a whole lot new in the trailer that you haven’t already seen in some form along the way, except for the very end tease of Wolverine, who has been notoriously absent in all of the trailers thus far.
