Saw this on digg yesterday, and figured folks here might be interested. It’s a really nice little Google Maps mashup that finds the closest local schools, shops, restaurants, etc, & calculates how far away they are, totaling everything up to give a “Walk Score”.

What does my score mean?
Your Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100. The walkability of an address depends on how far you are comfortable walking—after all, everything is within walking distance if you have the time. Here are general guidelines for interpreting your score:
* 90 – 100 = Walkers’ Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.
* 70 – 90 = Very Walkable: It’s possible to get by without owning a car.
* 50 – 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a car.
* 25 – 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving is a must.
* 0 – 25 = Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!
How it Works
Walk Scoreâ„¢ uses a patent-pending algorithm to calculate the walkability of an address based on:
* The distance to walkable locations near an address.
* Calculating a score for each of these locations.
* Combining these scores into one easy to read Walk Score.

Well, I got a 65…but this thing is pretty jacked up. For one thing a lady I know from the dog park was listed as a grocery store…for another, my closest bookstore wasn’t the bookloft, it was the Lion’s Den on Harrisburg Pike????
Assuming the correction for bookstore though, everything was under a mile except movie theater.
BTW…Lion’s Den isn’t even the closest ADULT bookstore…there’s Private on Parsons right around the corner…I heard.
Just beat you with a 67…and it told me that my nearest book store was “What The Rock?!” at 2.4 miles away instead of The Book Loft at 0.2 miles. I didn’t even realize that What the Rock sold books.
Also, my drug store was CVS at 0.65, but my grocery store was Kroger Food AND PHARMACY at 0.14!?!?! It doesn’t appreciate Gambrinus Park in the Brewery District either.
I’m clearly giving myself a 80.
It’d be kind of cool if they let you plug in your work address too. Still…very cool find Shroud.
73 for me!
49 for my old place in Grandview (though I bet a place near Grandview and 3rd would be >90)
15 for my folks’ place in Pickerington!
:?
Yeah, I got that too when I tried to do my parent’s house in Hilliard…which I’m guessing is gonna be like a 9.
Yeah, I noticed some pretty screwed up results for some categories when I ran it too — some Optometrist’s office near my place was listed for closest restaurant, and a comic shop like four miles away was listed for closest bookstore?
I wonder if it’s screwed up data in Google Maps throwing things off, or how they’re reading it in the API?
Sorry about the over the limit error – I was going to link it yesterday, but it made the front page @ Digg and got hammered as a result. I thought they’d gotten that worked out since it worked fine for me today, but apparently not.
80 for my place in Italian Village
and
51 for my place on Bryden although the restaurants were
Yardi Jamician- 0.26
Church’s Chicken
KFC
Old Bag of Nails
COSI
Bexley’s Monk 0.73
75 for my loft at 60 Spring. I figured it might’ve been a little higher.
I got a 25 out of 100. I love the Suburbs :D
84 out of 100, 8## Park Street.
LOL…yep, just did the folks house in Hilliard. 22/100! OUCH!
I got a 65 from my place in German Village, but it also screwed up my bookstore listing with “What the Rock?” at 2.5 miles away when the Bookloft is only .17 miles away.
It also lists Schiller as my nearest park .5 miles away, which it is the nearest big one, but the Frank Fetch Park is like spitting distance for me, and while it’s really small it’s actually pretty nice for what it is.
Can’t beat the proximity restaurants though… 8)
Lindey’s
Starbucks
The Original Max & Erma’s
G Michael’s Bistro
Schmidt’s
All within .22 miles.
Really my only driving amenity over a mile is movie theaters with the Arena Grand and Drexel Main both about a mile and a half away. Which oddly enough, when we went to the Arena Grand on Sunday and bumped into Paul while driving by, he gave us a hard time for driving there and not being “urban”. :P
You know though, the more I think about it…we got hosed on movie theater too. I guarantee South High Drive In is closer!
The Drive In is about 3.5 miles from me, so maybe 3 miles from you. I think that still puts the Arena Grand closer. Plus, you know… the Arena Grand is open year round. ;)
I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie at a theatre.
And I’ve never been to an adult movie theatre.
Is there even any adult theaters around anymore???
There was the one in Bexley and a drive through up by Worthington years ago, but I don’t even know of any at this point.
I got a 69! I think it can be higher, but I rarely walk anywhere since I am cyclist.
67 out of 100. I’ve never even heard of some of the places it listed less than a mile from my house.
Harrison west btw.
I only got a 71, but it missed around 10 closer bars than the only one listed, 2 grocery stores, and countless restaurants. It did well with the nearby schools and parks though.
