Concert Preview: Vanessa Silberman at Skully’s Music-Diner

Just past the mid-way point of a whirlwind thirty-eight city American Folk Rock tour, Los Angeles alt-rock songstress Vanessa Silberman will stop at Skully’s Music-Diner on February 23. Her latest single of the same name – recorded at BOP Recording Studio in Mafeking, South Africa – is vintage singer-songwriter: nothing but Silberman’s earthy alto and a strummed acoustic guitar. It’s a bit a departure from the grittier, electric crunch of her two previously available solo tracks “Think Tank” and “I Know” – a preview of what the audience will hear during her solo electric set on Tuesday evening. Local newcomers The Forty and punk-pop outfit Absolute Hero will round out the bill.

Those who haven’t yet gotten to know Silberman’s solo work may more readily recognize material from her band Diamonds Under Fire, which she founded and fronted as lead vocalist and guitarist in 2002. Over the course of twelve years, the band toured extensively and released a full-length eponymous album in 2011, along with four additional EPs between 2005 and 2013. Diamonds Under Fire tracks also appeared on four separate Off the Wall compilations sponsored by Vans shoes. In 2014, Silberman also supplied vocals for Kidforce’s Deathpop EP, and was the featured vocalist on UK band’s Polaroid Kiss’ album Youth last year.

When she’s not crafting her own tunes, Silberman is busy producing and promoting talent under the auspices of A Diamond Heart Production – her own artist development and publishing imprint. The company released a self-titled album for LA-based art-rockers Repeater in 2014. While working with Motswako hip hop group Hash One in South Africa in conjunction with BOP Recording Studios label Tshukudu, she recorded her new single.

After her Columbus appearance, Silberman’s tour will take her south to Louisville, Nashville, Memphis, and Oklahoma City; and back west for a handful of dates in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and California before she heads overseas for shows in London and Berlin at the end of March.

More information about Silberman, including tour dates and links to music downloads and other media, can be found on her own official Facebook page, and Diamonds Under Fire’s Facebook page. Details about Silberman’s projects under her A Diamond Heart Production imprint are available here.

Vanessa Silberman will appear at Skully’s Music-Diner, 1151 North High Street, on Tuesday, February 23 at 7:00 pm with guests The Forty and Absolute Hero. Admission is $7.00 day-of-show; all ages permitted.
