will be back in tommorrow on my way to work!
How is the coffee here?
It comes from Crimson Cup.
I haven’t had it, as I’m not a big coffee drinker.
Their hot chocolate is really good though, especially with whipped cream and carmel sauce. :D

The thing about the new Urban-Spirit Coffee Shop, 893 E. Long St., is not that it’s probably the only place in the area to get a high-quality cup of coffee, or a croissant or sandwich for lunch.
The thing is, Charity Martin-Via has decided to live her dream, and help her King-Lincoln neighborhood at the same time.
“I decided to open a coffee shop that also had space for an art gallery, something I’d always dreamed of doing.”
Martin-Via has begun a rotating series of exhibits that includes the work of renowned local artists such as Pheoris West and Melvin Robinson, as well as her own work and that of gallery students. She also has applied for a sidewalk permit and hopes to extend the shop outdoors in good weather, perhaps with artists working on the sidewalk as musicians play jazz.

This place is a great start. I look out the window and see two sizeable empty grass lots on the intersection. A couple of mixed use, good looking corner buildings (what else) would do a lot to give Long St a sense of place. I just noticed on google maps they are showing there were buildings up against the street on both corners and I recall seeing a Monroe on Long sign before somewhere around here (no sign in either lot), is this where it’s going to be?
The downside for this place is that you have to pay for wireless. I’ve been spoiled by other places and would rather they include that cost in products they sell. Like instead of $.05 for a mint make it a quarter. That won’t stop me from coming back though.
I think they’ll give you the code for it with your order. They want it to be for paying customers instead of anyone in the neighborhood being able to hop on for free.
True, but if you can afford a laptop there’s no excuse for you to not buy a cup of coffee. I could just imagine someone buying a $.05 mint and then setting up. That would piss me off.
This came throught the Near East Side listserv. Makes me feel guilty for going to Zanzibar this weekend.
I’d like to extend my sincerest thanks to those who have supported the coffee shop over the past few months. Urban Spirit Coffee Shop will celebrate 6 months of existance on the 19th. I am spending time in reflection and I’d like to share some of our accomplishments and new updates…
Urban-Spirit Coffee Shop, Ltd., with the assistance of patrons and supporters, has provided 7 jobs (5 of which have come from the near-east side). Additionally, Urban-Spirit was pleased to host 9 Columbus City Schools high school students this summer for the summer experience. We have represented the artwork of 11 local student artists as well as the work of 3 nationally known & established artists. With the assistance of VoteOhio, more than 32 near east residents have registered in the coming election as well as completed an additional 12 voter registration change of address forms. From your purchases of art postcards, Urban Spirit has awarded a local CCAD student an art supply scholarship. The Coffee Shop has partnered with the Vineyard (community beautification day), Homeport (King Lincoln Tour), OTENA (Holiday Tour), Leadership at its Best (scholarship donation), and The Taste of Mt. Vernon. Our nutritional focus includes the provision of sugar free
options and
low salt/low sugar food choices. We have taken many green initiatives such as utilizing point of use equiptment, water filtration systems, and recycable materials. Jazz night is going great…lot’ s of fun! We are moving it to the loft in colder months to come.
YOUR SUPPORT is appreciated.
Special thanks to those who have partnered with us along the lines of safety and community education. Urban Spirit Coffee Shop has survived a busted side window (only after 1 week of opening) and the blizzard of 2008. I THANK YOU!
There is so much a community can achieve together.
I have a SPECIAL REQUEST: Please send out your prayers and encouragement to my neighbor, Second Baptist Church. They were vandalized by gang related grafitti this past week. As many of you know, they do sooooo much for the community including a food and clothing pantry as well as a book bag and school supply drive. Let’s continue to look out for one another as we navigate these winter months.
Also, I invite you to participate in the Long Street Bike Tour this coming Saturday August 23rd! What a great way to fellowship with one another while pumpin’ your heart rate.
COMING EVENTS:
Grand Opening of our neighbor business “The Book Suite” Sept. 2008 (www.thebooksuite. com)

Urban Spirit FTW.
:D
:D
You kids. After seeing it 100 times, I had to look up ‘FTW.’
It doesn’t mean to y’all what it meant when my friend carved it into his arm.
A.
Heheh, sure doesn’t. Took me a while to figure it out as well.
LOL I haven’t looked FTW up yet, I still read it as F*CK the World
I hear ya.
I’m dreadfully unhip to this new lingo. Just having trouble groking it.
Sorry. I normally steer clear of dorky internet lingo and l33tsp33k but I was in a hurry (was out of town since Thursday) and trying to express my love of Urban Spirit with as few characters as possible.
I want to echo the love for Urban Spirit. The owner, Charity, is amazing with how she is taking on the challenge of spearheading the redev in the King-Lincoln District. The Book Suite, next door, will be opening soon in conjuction with an upstairs loft space for artists. I understand that Writing Wrongs Poetry will be unveiling the space in 2 weeks.
While big neighborhood redev plans are designed from the top down, it’s small startups like these that will help bring evolve that area to the next level. So yes indeedie, FTW.
I think they’ll give you the code for it with your order. They want it to be for paying customers instead of anyone in the neighborhood being able to hop on for free.
I’m in here right now and I’ve been told that the $1 fee is a one-time-only fee that ensures you access everytime you come in. You get the access code, enter it, and you’re online, no problem.
This is a very classy place from what I can see. I hope it does very well.
They also just had curbside boxes put in for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Columbus Dispatch. Oh well, two out of three isn’t so bad.
I stopped in today to get some lunch to go (can’t beat a turkey wrap and diet coke for $5) and ended up chatting with Charity quite a bit. As that email Motorist posted mentions, they’ve got a lot of big things in the works. New recipes and food items coming up for the cooler months. The new bookstore next door and new loft space upstairs. I took a little tour of the upstairs and it looks very nice.
I’ve noticed before that they’ve got a couple games (Scrabble, etc) sitting on a shelf by the wall. Would be fun to do a CU Scrabble party there sometime. :D

Charity and i are good friends. Please plan an event there in the near future. And thank you for continuing to promote Urban Spirit.
