Sara Adrian had no carefully thought-out image or design for the mural she planned to paint at a Franklinton art festival yesterday. “When you do street painting like this, you don’t have a lot of time to plan,” Adrian said. “You just kind of work into it to see what happens.”

“We had about 200 to 300 people come last year” for the first Urban Scrawl event, said Nikos Rutkowski, leader of the arts district. “We’re hoping to have at least the same number this time.”

The group hopes to create and grow an arts community in Franklinton. Visitors to the festival strolled by, stood or sat on the grass and watched yesterday as the murals, made from large, 4-by-8-foot pieces of particle board, took on paint.

Ashley Voss, a Grandview artist who goes by the name Coreroc, said the mural is a mix of graffiti art and pop-surrealism. Voss, who also took part in the first Urban Scrawl, said he enjoys the festival because it gets people involved in art. “To have the Columbus skyline in the background, it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.

  • I am so bummed that I wasn’t able to make it and to the after-party. I ended up flat on back, incredibly sick, all day. Alec even wanted to bring his skateboard.

Glad it was a big success.

    A.

  • Thanks so much to everybody for coming out yesterday!

I think I said thanks to all of our artists, vendors, and volunteers at least five times apiece already, but if I missed any let me say “Thanks”. The only musicians I got a chance to thank were Brainbow, so thanks to everyone else that performed as well!

It turned out to be a great day, and there was a great crowd.

And Mayor Coleman was indeed there. He gave me the fist-bump because I told him I had paint on my hands. I actually walked up to him barefoot, with a fluorescent orange bird that Coreroc stenciled on my foot. Too bad nobody got a photo!

  • CDS sherman wrote just wanted to thank everyone who came out to urban scrawl yesterday. what an amazing job all the volunteers and fad members did with the event. the artists are the ones that get a special thanks for all their hard work and effort. also thanks to all the random people that helped pack up at the end and transport it all back to the house.

the after party was great aswell and the pizza was josies zack. im really tired at the moment but i have to get up and start to clean. the house is destroyed from the party and teardown from the event.

HA! Chris, I had a dream last night that we came over and helped clean after the party!

U.S. was so much fun and went really well. I’m glad I got to be involved with all of it. Attendance was up from last year and the artists and vendors were amazing!! I have loads of pictures from yesterday and will post a link later. I got a photo of all but two finished pieces (those last two wouldn’t stop working, even though it was dark)!

Me too! My skateboarding pics didn’t turn out as well as I thought they would, but at least I got most of the artwork from start to finish!

  • I really had a great time at the event. It was quite impressive to see the progression of each piece throughout the day. A special thanks to Nikos for inviting us to vend.
