April Fools Day: UDF Announces Eight-Story Building to Replace Short North Location

Following in the footsteps of the Short North White Castle, OSU Campus Wendy’s and OSU Campus Taco Bell, the Short North United Dairy Farmers at 900 North High Street is getting the demolition-and-replacement treatment with an eight-story mixed-use building in mind. Representatives from UDF announced the details today, which include six floors of apartment units on top of a two-story ground floor retail space designed for a grocery-story sized UDF convenience store.

“The two-story format is a first for United Dairy Farmers,” stated UDF Marketing Director Karla Thompson, noting that an escalator system would connect shoppers between the floors. “We know the concept will work well for our Short North customers who be excited to see the expansion in the store’s offering of snacks, drinks, cigarettes and ice cream.”

Residents in the upper floors of the building will not only be able to take advantage of standard amenities like the 24-hour fitness center and a series of pneumatic tubes that will deliver online-ordered milkshakes from UDF directly into apartment kitchen units up above.

The project is expected to go in front of the Italian Village Commission later this month for review.

“While the plan is certainly preliminary at this point, I have to say that I like what I see so far,” said Italian Village Commissioner Jason Sudy. “I wish they could figure out a way to incorporate a few gas pumps out front like you see in other locations, so that might be something to consider.”

In related news, the Victorian Village Commission has a slate of new development proposals up for review in April as well, including:

    • A 10-story mixed-use apartment building that would replace the CheckSmart store at Starr and High, which would include 7 floors of apartments above a rebuilt three-story CheckSmart location.
    • A 14-story mixed-use apartment building that would replace the Family Dollar building at Fourth and High, which would include 10 floors of apartments above a rebuilt four-story Family Dollar superstore.
    • A 28-story mixed-use apartment building that would replace Skully’s Music Diner at 1151 North High Street, which would include 19 floors of apartments above a new 9-story Skully’s Music Warehouse.
