Two Kmart Stores and One Sears Location Closing in Central Ohio
Representatives from department store Sears announced this week the closure of 150 stores in their portfolio. That includes 42 Sears locations and 108 Kmart stores. All stores on the chopping block are expected to be shuttered by April with clearance sales expected to begin as early as this Friday.
Locally, the closures will affect three suburban stores in the Central Ohio region. That includes a Kmart in Mount Vernon, a Kmart in Reynoldsburg and a Sears in Lancaster.
“The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take actions to strengthen the Company’s operations and fund its transformation,” stated a press release issued by Sears. “Many of these stores have struggled with their financial performance for years and we have kept them open to maintain local jobs and in the hopes that they would turn around. But in order to meet our objective of returning to profitability, we have to make tough decisions and will continue to do so, which will give our better performing stores a chance at success. Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.”
Sears will continue to operate multiple hardware stores, PartsDirect locations, Appliance Outlets and Auto Centers throughout Central Ohio. The single remaining local Kmart store can be found on Stringtown Road in Grove City.
Other Ohio store closures include five Kmarts located in Gallipolis, Kenton, New Boston, St. Clairsville and Zanesville and three Sears locations in Akron, Chillicothe and Richmond Heights.
