The Ohio Roller Girls (OHRG) are looking for women to try out for our 2008 intraleague season.
Tryouts will be held this fall, and exact dates are posted on our website (http://ohiorollergirls.com/site/Season/recruiting.html). The first wannabe skater workshop is Sunday, August 26.
Although we’re still unsure how many new skaters we’ll be able to add to next season’s roster, any female over the age of 21 is encouraged to try out.
Being a part of OHRG takes a large time commitment; you’ll be expected to attend multiple practices each week—as well as volunteer for promotional and fundraising events. The average skater usually devotes a minimum of 15 hours per week to the Ohio Roller Girls.
You’ll need to purchase your own quad skates and protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet and mouthguard)—as well as pay monthly dues in order to be eligible to participate. Also, in roller derby, we like to say, “It’s not if you get hurt, it’s when you get hurt,” so we highly recommend obtaining health insurance if you don’t already have coverage.
Below are a few tips to help prepare you for the intense physical activity that roller derby demands:
Skate as much as you can! You can do this by going to rinks like Skate Zone 71 and United Skates of America. For open-skate times and locations, check www.usa-skating.com. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate basic skating skills, such as balancing on one foot, doing crossovers through the corners, turning around without stopping, and squatting while skating.
Get in shape! Being an Ohio Roller Girl means being an athlete, so start living like one. You should be working out a minimum of four times a week (both on and off skates), eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, minimizing partying, and getting a good night’s sleep. Take care of yourself now, and don’t be afraid to talk to a health or fitness professional to learn what’s right for you.
Buy your own equipment! You won’t want to wear someone else’s stinky, sweaty hand-me-downs. The best pads are usually available for purchase online only. However, you can usually find a decent “starter set” at a local skate shop or sporting-goods store. (Just remember: You get what you pay for.)
Stay informed! Visit our website and join our message board to stay up-to-date on important OHRG events.
Learn the rules! The Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) has the current set of rules available for download at their website.
Watch roller derby! The best way to learn about roller derby is to watch it! Our last game of the season is our intraleague championship bout, which is September 15 at the Ohio Expo Center’s Lausche Building (located at the fairgrounds).

this is funny cause what kind of fundraising did the organization do this year, different than last year, also i remember a time that the ohio roller girls were at every gallery hop, not this year. Seems like the organization needs to restucture and do some rethinking, just my opinion that’s all.
I have seen the roller girls out on many occasions. Rolling down high street promoting. They have done a few car washes near my house at Tee Jays on High st. and Morse. They also had some fun mixers pre- season that I attended that were very fun. All in all I would say that gallery hop may not be their audience and thats no reason tinsist on a restructure of the organization.
Without getting into too many details of our business here, I’ll just say that a partial restructure is part of the reason that we’ve been seen at a lot of places other than gallery hop this year. For example, we do the aforementioned car washes, the city of Columbus’ neighborhood pride events, some events with schools and charities — we’re even trying to sponsor other events when we can, like Craftin’ Outlaws.
We’re always looking for ways to promote to people who haven’t heard of us yet, rather than making those who have utterly sick of us. :)

whether gallery hop is there audience or not, you want to promote to everyone not just a single group of people come on now….
all i can say is good luck to them, i just see some things that they need to change that’s all.
Well I think the girls do a damn good job at what they do. Hell I know two girls that volunteer 8-12 hour shifts just to manage the statistics for the OHRG. That is alot of time dedicated to the cause. Sure you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. thats why I think if gallery hop didn’t work you move on. Besides they promote in melt and other local rags that end up in every darn store in the short north anyways.
I say keep up the good work ladies! and more musical chairs!!!
i understand your point but i have been to every bout this year and compared to last year they seem to be dropping off, it seems as if columbus could care less about them.
dont get me wrong i hope things turn around for them, and it is hard work for them ladies.
