Piece of Cake is nothing new. It’s been a sweet staple in the Short North for years. The bakery has locked down an unassuming corner spot where you can’t really see its impressive wares from the street. Modest from the outside, Piece of Cake is bigger on the inside; walk through the doors, and a palatial array of affordable sweets awaits. The choices are almost overwhelming.
The first bit of happiness came from spying a house version of Morning Glory Muffins. It’s a seldom-seen everything combo in a muffin that’s thick with shredded carrots, raisins, pineapple, coconut and perhaps a date (some sort of bonus sweet dried fruit). The bakery executes the classic in fine style, with coarse crumbs that weave together creating a harmonious background for the dried goodies.
But then, the muffin in all its glory was out-shined by a Chocolate Turtle Tart. The tart is completely ridiculous, and that’s meant in a good way. The base is a dense graham and pecan crust. Up the sides is an intense, rich chocolate ganache that builds a tall wall that holds an oozing pool of pure caramel and nuts. That’s it. No fluff, all stuff. It’s rich enough to make you pause in the binging process.
For familiar fare, there are oversized cookies in all the traditional flavors; peanut butter, snicker doodle and chocolate chip. Priced at $1.50, they are biggie bargains, the latter version clotted with quality chocolate chips (and we’ve seen our share of fake, mock-olate chips in the local cookie scene).
The menu features some savory options too, for those who want to go ahead and have lunch before dessert. There are also lots of slices of cake, as the name suggests. The prices are insanely reasonable. You can find it at 772 North High Street #104 in the Short North.
