The easiest way to find local confectioner, Katy’s Kandies, is online. Its website displays a bevy of goodies from toffee to truffles to buckeyes. Over the recent Mother’s Day weekend, a few of Katy’s Kandies’ wares made it into Weiland’s, and that afforded the perfect opportunity for a little impulse test-drive.
While the adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” might be great literature advice, it’s silly in the food world: good food looks nice. The little box of Katy’s truffles has a custom bow and tiny silk flowers adorning the lid. It’s very pretty.
The same evidence of care is found inside the box. The impulse buy was for Cookies and Cream Truffles. They’re dipped in a generous coating of both white and dark chocolates and inside is a mottled filling of soft oreo sweetness. While the familiar cookie flavor defines the truffles, there is a richness that makes them all grown up and luxe.
The ingredient list goes a long way in explaining the palate experience: while the shells are Guittard dipping chocolate, the insides involve sugar, butter and Oreos. And while the sandwich cookies are one thing, sandwich cookies enhanced with sugar, butter and a chocolate shell achieve on an entirely new level.
The chocolates come with a premium price: five generously sized truffles came in the pretty box with a price tag of $9.99. It turns out to be good value, when it comes to measuring the quality and heft of the box and its contents.
While impulse buyers are limited to choices found in stores, online shoppers can chose custom assortments with mixes of chocolate, peppermint and buttercream truffles in a sampler. The online site shares the backstory on the treats too: according the the About section, the candy started as an experiment after a significant investment in a failed fudge recipe. Turns out that failed fudge makes a great starting point for terrific truffles.
