I was out and about yesterday and decided to stop by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in The North Market for a treat. Never having tried the Swiss Cake Roll, I thought it would be a nice little splurge. The description reads “Ugandan Vanilla Bean ice cream with candied sour Italian cherries layered in chocolate syrup-soaked cake and blanketed in a silken chocolate ganache.” You can purchase an entire roll ($50) or a slice ($6). I went with a slice to go. It was packaged in a clear plastic container, paired with a generous pile of whipped cream and drizzled with cherry sauce.
After my 10 minute or so ride home, the treat was still in great shape, not a melted mess. It was probably nicer to have it set out for a bit before cutting in to it so it had time to unfreeze a little. I do enjoy its namesake Swiss Cake Rolls from time to time, but this grown up version elevates them to a whole new level. Amazing. The thin layer of chocolate ganache on the outside gives it a delicate shell. The cake is dense and chewy. The cherries are a sweet and delicious add in and the cherry sauce ties it all together. I would have liked to have a couple more cherries hidden in the ice cream, but it was still very good.
Jeni’s says that a whole roll will feed up to 10 or even 12 people. If you wanted to go all out with an ice cream cake for a party, this would be a nice choice.
