Treat to Try: Fried Snickers & Ice Cream

Sadly, the Ohio State Fair’s fried food freak show lasts only a few precious days each summer.

Happily, it’s not the only place that fries desserts. Fried gummi bears may have already enjoyed their day in the sun this year, but there’s still a spot to score Fried Snickers in Columbus, and you can get those Fried Snickers without subjecting yourself to admission fees, extreme heat, and gobs of humanity at large.

Iron Grill BBQ has been a personal destination-point for some time, thanks to its pork nachos. All the dining tables in the establishment are equipped with one of those little rolodex photo thingies, and Iron Grill’s rolodex is fully committed to photos of desserts such as carrot cake, chocolate thingies and what’s this? Fried Snickers & Ice Cream.

Fried Snickers & Ice Cream is exactly what you might expect, and that’s all good. A Snickers bar is enrobed in something that might be a cousin to a crescent roll. The shell takes the form of a thin, quick-fried bread, with a bit of saltiness to play off the melted mass of snickers bar inside.

While some might celebrate Snickers-On-A-Stick, it’s hard to argue that it’d be superior to a fried concoction that involves ice cream too. A big bowl delivers cool, creamy scoops of vanilla to play off the hot, melty, encrusted chocolate goo. The optimal spoonful cuts through the Snickers’ shell to scoop up breading, a wad of melted chocolate-caramel-nougat, and soothing ice cream.

So, the dessert is a slow eat, as the series of textures require calculated scoops. It also might be built for two, and that’s seldom said about desserts. Still, a solo adventure packs a heady sugar punch.

You can find Iron Grill BBQ, and its Fried Snickers & Ice Cream, year round at 5295 N. High Street.
