    Treat to Try: Coppa Gelato

Wait, something called a “gelateria” opened in Westerville? That’s worth the trek through Polaris traffic, just to say, “We hit the gelateria last night! North Siiiiiide!”

Sophisticated types might be rolling their eyes. Doesn’t everyone call gelato shops by their proper names? The answer to that question is “no”; the term “gelateria” is novel in these parts. And spellcheck doesn’t like it either. Regardless, Coppa Gelato is a new gelataria in Westerville.

The dessert spot is in a shiny, brick strip mall; a posh joint with a breathtaking display of swirled-up gelato flavors ready to be scooped out and served in stainless steel cups and bowls.

The house gelato is good. Using Vanilla Bean as a starting point, it’s shockingly bright white, light and relentlessly sweet. The cool sweetness of the dessert hits bite after bite courtesy the food science behind gelato. As the clerk explains: it has a lower fat content than ice cream, so it doesn’t coat your tongue and blunt the flavor.

In fact, Coppa Gelato’s website mentions that its products have about half the calories and a quarter of the fat of traditional ice cream. So, there’s a healthy angle too.

Alternately, you could just eat two or three times as much gelato, and call it a tie. James Triple Chocolate delivers a chocolate-charged intensity in the velvety, frozen medium. For the more adventurous, Coppa Gelato does a great version of Salty Caramel that delivers a homogenous, almost buttery-rich caramel flavor that’s tempered with mild saltiness. There’s even a Cookies and Milk flavor that has a few little chunks of oreos blended in, giving texture to the creamy treat.

The store has fruit flavors too, and to-go pints, and pastries such as crème puffs and cannoli. But really, why go to a gelateria and skip the gelato? Bowls start at just $2.75.

You can find Coppa Gelato at 925 N. State Street in Westerville.
