The List: 5 Reasons to go to Independents’ Day

By: Walker

It doesn’t seem like it’s been around for this long, but the Independents’ Day festival is already turning five years old. This all-day celebration of all things Columbus features crafters, artisans, murals, fashion, comedy, film, food trucks, coffee, booze, artwork, games, restaurants, authors, sculpture and of course… music.

Overwhelmed? No sweat! We asked Independents’ Day 2012 Captain Erin Corrigan to narrow it down to five really good reasons to attend this year, and here’s what she had to day:

1. Tons of music, featuring 36 bands!

Including:

  • Reunion shows from Bookmobile and Miranda Sound.
  • Rising stars Forest & the Evergreens, Brujas del Sol, and more.
  • Columbus favorites Watershed.
  • Independents’ Day year-one throwbacks Flotation Walls and Lo-Pan.
  • Kelley Deal (of the Breeders) and her new band R. Ring.
  • A full day of electronic dance music.

2. Groquet!

Giant Croquet. Need we say more?

3. Kids’ Space

Kids can participate in arts & crafts, sidewalk chalk, face painting and more — and learn about recycling, growing and healthy choices.

4. Mini Ohio Film Festival presented by Gateway Film Center and comedy showcase inside Due Amici

Check out some local shorts as well as a hilarious mix of improv and standup comedy.

5. Surprises!

You didn’t really think we’d give it all away, did you?

  • There’s going to be a lot of Local Comic Creators showing off their stuff this year! Nix Comics and 2 Headed Monster will have booths in the Craft Alley and I’ve helped to line up a great selection of indie comics folks to take part in the Author’s Fair, Including Jeff Smith!

  • 40+ original artists and handmade crafters will also be making up the annual Crafty Alley; these people celebrate local, support these festivals year-round, and promote the arts community as a whole!

  • Coolest event all year and coolest poster…Seriously who designed that…would be a cool tattoo

  • You would think there would be at least some mention of the
businesses that are open downtown for this event.
If there is I can’t find it.
Some of these places open for this day even though they are
    normally closed.
How bout some support for the businesses that are there everyday
    trying to make downtown better.
You repay them by bringing in food trucks to take business from them.
    Then promote the food trucks.
    Nice.

  • In that first paragraph we mentioned both food trucks and restaurants. Didn’t really give food trucks any sort of preferential treatment…

That being said, the restaurants on Gay Street have always done pretty well for themselves during Independents Day. This is a good event that benefits them. The food trucks won’t hurt them at all.

  • A few years back I discovered Jack’s diner during Independents’ Day and have since gone back each year for a burger and milkshake. Normally, they’re open Monday-Friday from 7-3 so I can’t make it to their diner, so ID is kind of a special treat. Local restaurants that are open during the festival get nothing but love from me.

  • Thanks for the comedy stage love!

  • @mrsgeedeck I went to Jack’s based upon your comment, and loved every second of it. Good recommendation!
