The List: 5 Easy Ways to Beat the Heat

By: Walker

Temperatures in Central Ohio can’t seem to stay out of the triple digits lately. Saturday’s high is projected to be 106. Prolonged exposures to that kind of heat can be dangerous for many people, so we advise that you stay indoors if you can, and keep cool whenever possible. Here’s five easy ways you can cool down quickly today:

5. Take a dip in a public pool

Columbus has a great system of nine public swimming pools, as does most suburban communities. All Columbus public pools are free to use with the display of a leisure card ($1). The new Dodge Park Pool in Franklinton reopened recently following a major rebuilding project. More information on swim times and locations can be found HERE.

4. Go see a movie (indoors, of course)

Some of the best air conditioning can always been found inside your local movie theater. Today would be a great day to catch a new film and chill out in a nice dark room. We’d recommend Moonrise Kingdom, Spiderman, Ted or Predator if you’re looking for a few good suggestions on what to see this weekend.

3. Splash in the fountain at the Scioto Mile

The crown jewel of the Scioto Mile park is the fountain system located in Bicentennial Park (pictured up top). It’s certain to be crowded today, but there’s no better way to cool off Downtown than here. As a bonus, you can grab a nice cool cocktail at Milestone 229 when you’re done. Which leads us to…

2. Drink plenty of cool beverages

Ok, alcoholic beverages might sound pretty good today, but you’re probably better off avoiding them altogether if you’re going to be spending much time outside in the sun. Perhaps a better idea might be the locally made JC’s Sweet Iced Tea. It can be a little hard to track down sometimes, but it’s totally worth the work.

1. Eat cool foods

Put down the bowl of chili and pick up a bowl of gazpacho. Drop the slice of pizza and pick up a slice of watermelon. Oh, and don’t forget to eat plenty of ice cream today. Can’t go wrong with Jeni’s, Graeter’s, Whit’s Frozen Custard, Vienna Ice Cafe, or whatever other brand happens to be your favorite.
