The outside looks just about finished. We'll have to get a CU Condo Tour scheduled here soon! ;)

Took a new photo the other day. Doesn't look too different from the one above, but I'm guessing a lot has progressed on the interior since then.

I live above those now empty former uniform shops on High between Skully's and 5th Ave, and I'm happy to see that a lot of work is being done to one of them. It looks like a coffee shop is going in (called Trevonna Coffee House...I may have gotten that first word wrong). But I agree that I hope for more to be done to this strip (and I'm not sure if I like the Garden Condos idea). The broken glass and constant panhandling as I get out of my car (I have to park in the lot next to Skully's) gets old very quickly.

And it makes me very happy to hear of the plans to possibly maintain the greenspace behind the school. I'd love to have a back yard!

Walker Says: I agree that those empty/vandalized retail units should be a concern, but I really don’t think it will be a long term problem for the area as it continues to fill in over the next 5 years.

I sincerely hope so - I live a couple blocks from High and 5th and desperately want to see that area improve - I'm sick of passing all those dark, empty units on my way home from the Short North.

Brad - I'm not "picking apart the short north", whatever that means, I was just wondering if there was any plan for development of that area around the Jackson that you were part of, or knew of (with the benefit to you that it would help sell units). Regardless, I wish you the best of luck with your venture. It will really be great for our neighborhood.

@Howatzer - I'd be suspicious of moving to any urban area or city that didn't have a sex shop. The fact that we have two is a huge bonus.

To the last poster I really like the play on the name...howatzer! When The Dakota was built the same things were being said...dancing nude males on High Street in the Full Monty. Mr. Howatzer you are picking apart the Short North with your comments. The Short North is about all parties and that is why it is the place to live and be. Have you been to Chicago or New York? I encourage you to travel some to see why the urban areas are thriving.

To your presale question. If The Jackson has only sold 35%...why are we building and nobody else?

Gotcha. I thought you were talking about those larger projects and not the existing individual retail. I agree that those empty/vandalized retail units should be a concern, but I really don't think it will be a long term problem for the area as it continues to fill in over the next 5 years.

Anyway, the thought really didn't occur to me to ask about current sales figures, as I was looking at the project more from a development standpoint, but seeing that Brad has a CU account and has been fairly active on here lately, I imagine that he can jump in here to answer that and any other questions anyone else may have about the project. ;)

Walker Says: I don’t think the development around here is languishing.

I was pointing all of the empty retail space north of Scully's below 5th (where there used to be a couple of uniform clothing shops). Right now these have broken windows and are in serious need of remodeling. Across the street on high you've got 2 sex shops, a head shop and more empty retail. Add all this up and I would say "languishing" is appropriate. My point is, there should be some concern about how the Jackson units are going to sell. The actuall current sales status of the Jackson was never brought up in the interview.

I'm more excited about this than Ibiza. The frame is actually up as we speak; they're now putting in windows and whatnot. High St north of here just needs some entrepreneurs. West of here on W 3rd and Dennison are two empty cracked, uneven parking lots with plants growing out of them. How about some infill off of High? There's still a good amount of empty space in both of the Villages here.

Is that interior rendering from a unit in the Jackson? It shows a more from the West like view. Not unlike what someone living in the North Bank Park building would see.

It's a rendering from their website. I imagine they just put the skyline in there the best they could without renting a helicopter or a crane to snag the most accurate representation of what the skyline would look like. ;)

howatzer Says: One major question that wasn’t asked, though, was how well the units are selling. Sounds like you just answered your own question. ;)

howatzer Says: Another big issue is the languishing development at the 5th and High area. I’ve heard rumors that someone may be renovating the Garden Theatre, which would be huge, and also a small gourmet food shop taking over half of Mary Catherines, but just rumors.

I don't think the development around here is languishing. These types of projects just seem to take a much longer time than we want them to. The Jackson was announced three years ago, and I'm sure there was plenty of pre-announcement work that went into it beforehand.

Keep in mind that you've also got the just-completed Smith and High development and the Weinland Park Kroger revamp that should be starting soon.

As for those other two projects you mentioned, I don't think either of them are rumors. The Ohioanna Market was announced over a year ago for half of the Mary Catherine's space, but was delayed due to the Dirty Frank's project. And the Garden Theater Condo Development has been going through rounds of Victorian Village commission meetings to hash out the details of the project.

I have also heard many people reference the parcel at the NE corner of Fifth & High several times as the potential site for a Walgreens (ugh) development, but I'm not sure if that was information that came from a University District Commission Meeting, or just rumors. I would hope that the UD would ask for something a little taller than that. ;)

Great to hear the status of the Jackson. One major question that wasn't asked, though, was how well the units are selling. I was looking at the Jackson website and about 35% of the units are listed as in contract. I've heard that the target pre-sale before groundbreaking for these developments is about 60%, so that doesn't sound too good. Also, most of the sales are for less expensive units, with few of the $400K or higher selling. One lucky dog did go into contract on a penthouse unit.
Another big issue is the languishing development at the 5th and High area. It can't be easy to sell units with all of those empty, junky-looking retail spaces next door. I've heard rumors that someone may be renovating the Garden Theatre, which would be huge, and also a small gourmet food shop taking over half of Mary Catherines, but just rumors.
