The Hills Market Downtown is coming up on its five year anniversary, and to celebrate, the market will host a party featuring its most popular dishes and drinks, games and live music.

The party, set for March 10, will be an afternoon event serving in-house lobster rolls, local potato chips, Der Dutchmen hand pies, pulled pork sandwiches, barbecue chickpea sandwiches and build your own Bloody Marys.

WCBE 90.5 FM will be preparing kids games, prizes, while local band Matt Monta & the Haymakers will return to the market for a live performance. There will also be a raffle for a $500 gift card for customers who register on its Eventbrite page.

This anniversary party marks five years of The Hills Market’s Downtown location. In the last few years, the market has added a host of new components, including pop-up lunches with Willowbeez vegan soul food and Asempe Kitchen West African cuisine, and weekly food specials like taco Tuesdays and barbecue Fridays. The market has also largely expanded its beer and wine selection.

“As the Columbus beer market expands, with a new brewery opening almost every week, there’s more demand for the local brew,” says Amanda Anderson, The Hills’ Wine & Cheese Director.

The Hills Market is a popular destination for customers looking for a meal on the go. But another addition to the market has also been an increased the number of events, based on what customers are into these days.

“Instead of being a place where you go buy your groceries, it’s a good thing to be a place where people want to hang out,” Anderson says. As a result, the market has added wine tastings every Saturday, cocktail and wine dinners, and winemaker meet and greets.

The food retail industry has seen some major developments as of recently, including a bid by Amazon to create the first automated, check-out free grocery store of the future. But Anderson says that The Hills isn’t worried about any changes in the grocery business.

“We’ve never really been a traditional grocery store anyway. We focus on events, we focus on making sure we have food ready for people to go, food for people to take home and cook, reheat at home,” Anderson says. “I mean, we do have several customers that are here every day buying their weekly groceries, and I don’t think they’re going to go anywhere else, because they like it here.”

The Hills Market Downtown’s anniversary party takes place March 10, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 95 N. Grant Ave. The market will also host a March Madness wine tasting on March 2, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
