Crew comes from behind to defeat FC Dallas, 2-1, Saturday at Crew Stadium
Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008
Crew forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto showed why he is the MLS assists leader, notching his 11th and 12th of the season in a three-minute stretch of the second half that helped turn a first-half deficit into a 2-1 Columbus victory before a crowd of 17,647, the largest of the season at Crew Stadium.
FC Dallas saw its five-game unbeaten streak end, after former Crew forwards Jeff Cunningham put the Hoops into the lead in the 35th minute with the 100th league tally of his career.
The Crew returns to action next Saturday, Aug. 23, vs. Real Salt Lake at Crew Stadium. The match will be televised live locally at 7:30 p.m. on ONN.

I’m seeing this opinion a lot and I have to disagree. We are deep in the midfield. We are only deep up front because we typically play with just one forward. In the back we are dangerously shallow, especially at center back. An injury to Chad Marshall would probably end our season. Neither O’Rourke nor Iro are up to the quality of the rest of the squad. We have a bit more coverage with our fullbacks, and we aren’t hurting much in goal. But really, when people say we have depth it’s mostly because we have six midfielders who could legitimately start on any team in the league – Schelotto, Rogers, Carroll, Gaven, Ekpo, Noonan, and that’s not counting the injured Moffatt.
Don’t get me wrong – I love this team. I enjoy watching them more than any previous iteration of the Crew ever. I think we legitimately have a shot to win it all. But let’s not fool ourselves – there’s not enough money in MLS for any club to be deep everywhere. Just because were are the best team in the league doesn’t change that.
Long suffering Crew Fan Friend: “This game was the peak of 13 years of Crew soccer.”
At the final whistle of the NE match I turned to my brother and said “Sweet Vindication”.
and it is.. after the dark days of 2006, I can see The Crew going all the way..
Here are the MLS match highlights. I watch this and I get excited all over again….
That video sure makes it look like Garey was way offside on his second goal. There must have been a defender out of frame that was keeping him on. Even Dwight initially thought he was off.
Schelotto is the best player to wear a Crew uniform. Ever. He has made this team confident. He has made this team beleive they can come back and win. A big difference from last year.
What’s it going to take to keep him here?
Also Coach Schmidt’s contract is up.
What’s it going to take to keep him here?
They’ll have to make him a DP. IMHO it would be money well spent.
Yep.. I hope we van see him here for another year. I’ve heard he wants a bump in pay so his wife can quit her job in California and join him in Columbus..
What’s it going to take to keep him here?
Good schools, apparently. One of the guys I watch the Thursday night game of the week with told me one of his nieces or nephews (can’t remember which) is in the same pre-school as one of Guille’s kid’s, and he (Guille) is really into that school; it’s much better than he could do in Argentina, he wants his kids to learn English, etc.
FWIW, it’s Schmid (no “t”).

I’ve actually heard rumors of that too.. to be honest though, I think he will want DP money. I think there are a number of MLS teams that would love to have on-the-pitch leadership like GBS, and they would be happy to help him find good schools in their area.. :\
It would take DP money to keep him anyway, since after this season his full salary applies to our cap, whereas currently only a portion does, due to a weird clause in his contract that’s beyond my understanding. *
But then the question is: do we want a 36-year-old as our DP?
* I should point out to the uninitiated that all the player’s contracts are with the league, not the individual clubs. It was designed this way to insure some level of parity, both with quality and salary levels. The more conspiratorial among us (;)) also believe it to be that way to make sure clubs in big markets always with the league.
But then the question is: do we want a 36-year-old as our DP?
That’s a good question to be sure, but then again, the flip side of this question is “Do we want to lose this very valuable and capable player to another team?”
I have to wonder, with the way GBS has been pouring it out the last month if there might already be some sort of handshake deal already.
The Crew are MASSIVE!!!!
That win over the Revs was far and away the best I have ever seen them play, and they were missing their top scorer and captain to National team duties.
By the way, is anyone else bothered by Michael Arace calling them the “Fighting Canaries”? It is not a nickname that any Crew fans (that I know of) like at all. Ray Stein’s defense of the term was pathetic in the Mailbox section of the sports page last week. He said, “The practice of sportswriters bestowing nicknames on the teams and players they cover is a lost art. While “Fighting Canaries” may not strike your fancy, it seems a far sight better than the Jaundiced Floppers or the Xanthic Whatevers.” This might be valid if the sportswriter a) gives a shit about the sport in question b)has respect for the team and fans and the respect of the team and fans c)has more creativity than a 3rd-grader.
By the way, is anyone else bothered by Michael Arace calling them the “Fighting Canaries”?Yes, but I avoid it by not reading the Dispatch. :)

I think Shawn Mitchell has done a great job with his coverage.
I think we’re better Black Sheep than Canaries

The Dispatch reporters do the best they can with the space allocated to them. It’s tough for them to get column inches with what the paper does cover. Competing with OSU football, for starters.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto is 35 years old. Remarkably, he has started all of the Crew’s 23 games.
The season caught up with the midfielder this week when he suffered an injury to his left hamstring. He won’t play Saturday at Toronto and could miss a home game Thursday against New York.
“I feel the muscle is hard,” said Schelotto, who was hurt during practice Tuesday. “It is better to not play in Toronto and (against) New York (because) I think we are in the playoffs and I want to play in the playoffs.”
Crew coach Sigi Schmid echoed Schelotto’s cautionary approach.

I so wish I could go to this. They tied on the road against Toronto FC in crap conditions, so I’m hoping to see them come out swinging for this match.
We’ll be missing Brad Evans and Schelotto in front, but I’m hopeful that Noonan (Noooooooonan!) can fill in some of the gaps. He’s still a strong looking player and he’s already stepped up for a goal and an assist. Ekpo has been pretty active as well and playing with confidence of of his Olympic Silver.
I’ll have to go find a bar with ESPN2 since the hotel doesn’t seem to have it :-(

Anyone know what Carroll’s status is? He is not listed in the lineup and he has quietly tied our midfield together with solid performances all season.
I was assuming he would be playing.. I might be wrong though. I’ll agree he’s been quietly awesome all season.. even in the darkest moments (of there have only been a few this year) he’s been great. Wonder what’s up?

I will be there. I’m aiming to eat two brats for ever Crew goal.
