Now, beached between State and Town streets like a mortally wounded whale, one of the city's greatest disappointments will be leveled for future development.

At 7 p.m. yesterday, the mall closed to the public forever. Today, the meager remnants go on the auction block.

Columbusite, the nice thing about C-shaped buildings is that they create a lot of rooms inside with windows on two sides. That allows a lot of natural light in and makes for a nice place to live or work. Why do you think corner offices are so desirable?

Also, when posting a mindless rant online don't FORGET to capitilize an entire word to drive your point home. Speeling mistakes also lend credibility.

Ha, yeah, I've learned just not to read those comments ..... I get way to angry at how stupid some people are ..... then I get more angry that when election day rolls around they actually have a say in things. I really believe that if you dont know all the facts about what you're voting for, you shouldnt be allowed to vote.

Just go to NBC4i and read the comments. You'll get plenty of comments trashing Columbus. All these comments are the same:

-trash downtown as being drug and crime ridden
-trash any infrastructure project that doesn't involve a highway
-rant about the rich folks and their downtown condos
-then completely ignore any of the number of given facts and argue a point that logical doesn't make sense. Like arguing to put this project to a vote, followed by a comment on how great a casino would be. Despite that being voted down. What, 3 times?
-then top it off with some ludicrous rant about Columbus not being the next [Chicago, NYC, etc.], even though no one has really ever argued for us to be the next [insert city]

Always a great way to introduce yourself.

Anna, welcome to CU. Spend some time here and you'll see a lot of great discussions on many of the topics you spoke of. A simple search for streetcar or light rail will give you plenty of arguments for the why.

Anna: When was the last time you set foot downtown? It sounds like you're talking about a different city.

Anyway... If you've got better ideas to share, by all means share them. It's easy to complain about something. Let's hear your solution to the problems you've mentioned.

This project is absurd and it would be more absurd if we used stimulus money to fund or partially fund it. The park would turn into another needle park, junkies and homeless, as it stands now there are so many brand new condos for sale the developers couldn't even unload them at auctions . As for retail...Hello, Hello wasn't that what city center was. Where do these terrible ideas come from? And, why do we need a new transportation system down high??? Did the buses stop running? How about money for the police, how about money for education, how about money to keep the rec centers opened so kids have a safe place to go? Why don't we just have another Ameria Flora - that was a big success - not. Downtown Columbus is just not a draw and will never be a Chicago, New York or San Francisco and is Gahanna Creekside will never be San Antonio River Walk.

Someone once asked me how I biked from OSU to Bexley without a bullet proof vest. The misconception is often amusing.

You're right Walker, the 9 acre park is a place holder for the ultimate plan. It's easier to sell parcels of lawn to developers than a chunk of a dead mall. IMO this plan gives the city maximum flexibility to react to needs over the next 10 years. If the economy turns around there might be a need for more housing than offices (or the opposite).

I was a bit bored at work so I wandered over to the Dispatch Hot Topic. I'm glad I don't rely on those folks for impressions of the city. I had no idea how much crime and prostitution there is downtown! One poster suggested we need more parking, not parks, downtown. Another wanted the mall turned into a jail. It's a wonder that these people ever leave their homes. Yikes!

I think the initial 9 acre park without anything else around it will be underused.

I think the final 1 acre park with 30,000 sqft of retail 40,000 sqft of restaurant, 400 residential units, and 400,000+ sqft office space will be a much better fit.

From my understanding, the larger 9 acre park we'll get out of step one is an interim step. We either have a large underused park while we wait for the rest of the infill, or we have a large abandoned mall while we wait for the rest.
