The Chintz Room Closing its Doors

After nearly two years in business, The reincarnated Chintz Room will be closing its doors at the end of the month. The restaurant was launched inside the former Lazarus building by Elizabeth Lessner and Michael Hermick to pay homage to the original restaurant by the same name that was located inside the iconic department store.

“There were some missteps in the beginning,” said CU Food Critic Miriam Bowers Abbott in a review last year. “Some who remembered the original Lazarus institution were outraged that the new Chintz Room failed to fully recreate their childhood memories. Other, more general fans of CFL were disappointed that it wasn’t as dark and homey as its other joints.”

The Chintz Room is the latest in a string of closures to hit the Columbus Food League — a loose collective of local dining establishments with ownership or co-ownership by Lessner. Betty’s Fine Food and Spirits and The Jury Room both closed in 2014, followed by the Surly Girl Saloon in 2015.

Hermick posted the following message to his personal Facebook page this afternoon:

It is with great sadness that I must announce the closing of the Chintz Room. The last year and a half has been a crazy and wonderful ride. I have met some great people and I never worked so hard at something before. I truly gave it everything I have. The Chintz Room Staff is some of the best I have ever worked with. They have been dedicated and loyal and gave believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. For that I am truly great-full. Seeing their faces and the faces of our customers is what I will truly miss on a daily basis.

To my friends who volunteered their time, who patronized us, and who listened to me complain after my 7th 16 hour day in a row whose plans got cancelled because of The Chintz Room I’m sorry and again thank you so much for everything you did for me. To my staff thank you for always being there and for your support and dedication. I will truly miss all of you.

NOW ARE YOU READY. Because I think we need one last blow out before we close. Virginia West is putting together a super end of the line blow out DRAG BRUNCH this Sunday July 31. Doors at 11 show at noon. Call us for your reservation now 614-456-7329
