I'm reviving this thread because I wanted to thank Liz (and Harold of course) for turning the back room of The Surly Girl into a perfect wedding reception locale for two of my best friends last evening. The food was excellent, the service was quick and friendly, and the drinks were perfect, including the champagne toast.

Liz, I can see why you are so beloved in this city. Meeting you was an honor and pleasure.

Yeah, that was the place I was referring to up at Polaris. It's too far for me to go on any sort of regular basis. Usually I just make this stuff up at home but that's usually a much more expensive and messy option than just going to a vendor for it.

Places I seriously miss right about now:

Dog Day Afternoon

Gene and Jude's

Superdawg

Johnny's Beef (on North Ave Elmwood Park) - best beef/combo ever!

Portillo's (even though it's a "local" chain it is still great)

Now if only we had tamale vendors walking the bars here too. Nothing hit the spot after a few beverages the way a fresh homemade tamale did delivered directly to you for $.50/$1.00, good times.

Gene and Jude’s

Superdawg

Johnny’s Beef (on North Ave Elmwood Park) – best beef/combo ever!

chivespa1 wrote Anyhow, yes, 1/4lb dog, steamed, poppysead bun warm, yellow mustard, celery salt, diced onions, 2 half slices of tomato, 2 half slices of cucumber, relish, 1/4 sliced pickle spear, 3-4 sport peppers. Make me up 2 of those for $6 plus a coke and I'm in heaven.

If you REALLY want to put me over the top serve up 3 other beautiful things:

Italian Beef on French Bread, dipped in au jus (soak it) covered with spicy gardinera or replace the beef with a spicy Italian Sausage. For the ultimate bring on the combo - yep - Italian beef over top of an Italian sausage, dredged through the au jus on French bread with plenty of spicy gardinera on top.

If you can't wait for Dirty Frank's to open and you're up for driving out a bit, Wholly Joe's on Polaris has chicago-style dogs and italian beef sandwiches. No sausage-option that I know of, but you can get it dipped, with peppers, however you like.

Curving back to Liz' question I'm all for 1/4lb dog. I'm a Chicago boy and I hate that the only place "in town" that serves a pretty good chicago style dog is all the way up at Polaris. That's total bunk. It is possible that Fabiens does too but the first time I saw their menu and they charged like $5 for a chicago dog I said no thanks and haven't been back since.

Anyhow, yes, 1/4lb dog, steamed, poppysead bun warm, yellow mustard, celery salt, diced onions, 2 half slices of tomato, 2 half slices of cucumber, relish, 1/4 sliced pickle spear, 3-4 sport peppers.

Marinos! I love this little place, the fish/chips are always good and Saturdays are all you can eat. Marinos has smelts! Fried smelts with lemon and french fries, yummy. It's run by a family, super nice people. If you order smelts they'll remember you forever. The fish chowder is quite good too, a great to-go dinner on the way home when you're tired of winter.

Very inexpensive.

It looked really good and it was $5.00 for fish, chips, and hushpuppies. I guess if you're a STARVING man you might be able to eat 2 of those, but I'd still say that would be way more food than any restaurant would give you for $10.

Anyway, it looked good and actually made me wish I hadn't gotten Chipotle and you know that's saying a lot
