BY BILL CHRONISTER

The thing about Elizabeth Lessner is, she cares. And when she cares, she acts. Lessner has three successful restaurants: She started with Betty’s Fine Food and Spirits in 2001, and followed up with the Surly Girl Saloon in 2005 and the Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails in 2007.

She just took possession of the former Queen Bee Restaurant, 248 S. 4th St., and plans to turn it into Dirty Frank’s Hot Dogs by mid-July.

And she’s putting together the Ohioanna All-Star Market, an Ohio-only convenience store that is expected to open later this year two doors north of the Surly Girl in the Short North.

  • As to hot dogs, a couple of sizes is great — I just want a real chicago dog

but please please have your sweet potato fries in addition to regular fries —

    open soon!!!

  • The hot dogs they had at the parking lot blow out were HUGE!! I don’t like a lot of bun so that’s the only thing that concerned me with such a large dog, but they looked good and interesting. The Dube has those really big hot dogs, how big is that? I’d say too big for a place like this where I’m not sure I want to attack everything with a knife and fork.

As for a fry tasting, I don’t think you’ll have any problems getting taste testers :) I like a seasoned fry and no one seems to have those around here. Also, curly q’s are hard to find here as well, but there might be a reason for that!!

Can’t wait for the opening!! Yeah!!!

  • dogs, Ballpark size is fine

    frys:

I’m not sure how the following are made, but possible something that is battered and seasoned alittle before fried is my preferrance ala Arepazo, Rallys, Arby’s curly fries.

but really when I think of a hot dog shoppe kinda of fry i think are the kind made ala charley’s steakery/steak Escape with salt and vinegar. (but keep the skin on and never frozen)and actually, i would eat fries made totally/mostly out of potato skin. so if you had some people that doesn’t like skin on fries, instead of throwing out the skin fries you could fry them up for people like me. like I’d eat the fries made from the outer edge of potato and the inside of the potato could be made into potato salad, mashed potatoes, or fries or whatever

shoestring would be great as well

also you need to consider the seasoned wedge, fried to be crispy(very) kinda like KFC, but crispier

  • Yeah. Hurry Dirty Frank’s!!!

    I need weenies!!!

that’s actually really what I wanted today.

  • Maybe a Hot Dog eating contest on opening night at Dirty Franks?

What topping would be on the Dirty Franks House Dog?

How many mustards should be offered.

Columbus needs more hot dog places. Thanks for adding one Liz.

  • BCOZ wrote The 1/4 lb Vienna, pleeease.

    Shoestring fries double pleeeeeease.

I think 1/4 pound would be a large dog – I’m a New York dog guy – a cart sized dog with Gulden’s and hot kraut. I don’t know why any one would eat anything else!

+1 on the shoestring fries – Try Chile Verde’s

Other fry types – peanut oil fried steak fries a la steak escape (as entioned by a previous poster) would be an excellent option. In addition to the Shoestring fry option, that is…

  • for me personally I think its not the size of the dog it would be what is the dog made of, flavor and the casing. How is it going to be cooked? open flame or grilled. The secret to a good dog is usually in the sauce> I really think that is what separates one hot dog place from another. As for the fries BBQ fries would be good for me.

  • I love a hot dog eating contest idea! if liz could get some of those TV personalities from the eating contests it would be great.

  • Double fried pommes frites style fries!

  • I am with lifeliberty on the handcut skin on fries with vinegar, although really I like all fries and will more than likely eat whatever you serve :)

  • Queen Bee awning is still up. did this stall? anyone have an update? i’m ready for a hot dog for lunch.

  • Did a type of fry get settled upon?

I was just thinking about this over the weekend… if multiple types of dogs will be available, why not multiple types of fries? Tip Top has two kinds of fries. Why not give people some variety since it sounds like everyone has a favorite. ;)

  • I know I would frequent a place that had good hushpuppies!

Last I heard there’s just been some delays on permits, inspections, red tape, etc. The same sort of stuff that ends up delaying all sorts of projects like this. Otherwise it sounds like they’re nearly ready to open.

    Can’t wait!

City Barbeque has good hushpuppies. But I’m with you, I’d like a closer option. That’d rule.

  • There appears to be a place called Marino’s Seafood at Northwest and 5th Ave that I’m going to go check out tonight!

It’s pretty good…it’s an old converted Arthur Treacher’s. I haven’t been there for quite a few years, but it’s pretty good fried seafood, if a little pricey.

  • marinos is like free! you can get an awesome meal for 6 dollars. i used to go there for lunch all the time when i worked in victorian village. id recommend it.

Weird, I thought it was super cheap. I’d never been in there either, but Jim wanted to try it so when I was getting a Chiptle fix this weekend we stopped in so he could get fish and chips. It looked really good and it was $5.00 for fish, chips, and hushpuppies. I guess if you’re a STARVING man you might be able to eat 2 of those, but I’d still say that would be way more food than any restaurant would give you for $10.

Anyway, it looked good and actually made me wish I hadn’t gotten Chipotle and you know that’s saying a lot
