Highland West

A section of the Hilltop, Highland West grew in the late 1800s thanks to the National Road (now West Broad Street) and the nearby state psychiatric hospital and school for the developmentally disabled, as doctors and staff who worked at the institutions lived in the neighborhood. Many families fleeing Franklinton after the 1913 flood built homes in Highland West through the 1920s, and the area has experienced a rebirth of sorts in recent years.
