Grandview Yard first announced Phase 1 of their 90 acre development in Grandview Heights in July of 2009, and that phase is celebrating the grand opening tonight with a community open house between 6pm and 8:30pm. 62nd Emmy Awards Gift Totes to Feature Local Swag

Local jewelry designer Kristan Early of Bella Beads Studio is one excited lady. The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday and tonight is the Secret Room Style Lounge Event for the Emmys that will feature her work. The Emmys Secret Room Style Lounge is a benefit for Operation Smile, offering for auction gift bags signed by celebrities. Early created five new designs and seventy-five pieces for the event. Some will be sent to magazine editors as well.

Early has been creating jewelry as a side business for nine years. She says, “I have had incredible support by friends, family and customers. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity and if nothing else, being part of the event is really a reward in itself.” For the past three years, she has had a studio space in Junctionview Studios and has participated in local shows in Columbus. Her work is currently available at Kussmaul Gallery in Granville. The pieces she created for the show will be available for sale late September, but you can see them now after the jump! [Read More]

Magic Garden Mastering Opens in Grandview

It’s no secret that the Columbus music scene is jam-packed with amazing talent these days. Although the stages of our local music venues are filled night after night with mind-blowingly gifted artists and musicians, some really cool things are happening behind the scenes as well. Enter Brian Lucey. Brian emailed last week to let me know that his new Grandview studio, Magic Garden Mastering, is going to be having an opening bash next week. He also spilled the beans that he’s recently finished mastering The Black Keys newest album Brothers to be released in May. A couple days later, I had the pleasure of meeting with Brian to tour his awesome new space, learn about the artistic science of mastering, chat about Dan Auerbach and The Black Keys, and discuss where he’s been and where he’s headed. And most importantly, he gives me the scoop on how to join in his sweet opening bash and Brothers listening party.

2009 Year in Review: Urban Development

With the economic recession being fully realized in late 2008, many expected 2009 to be a slow year in terms of urban development. Several projects had been delayed or canceled due to financing issues, but many others were able to continue with seemingly little difficulty. It’s been said that cities that continue to develop during recessions will come out ahead when the economy turns back around. Judging by the number of projects either under construction or in development, it would seem that Columbus is well posed to thrive in the near future.

Below is a rundown of the urban development projects that were completed, under construction, or announced in 2009. [Read More]

Review: Clay Café in Grandview

Not being the artsy, painter type – I’m a writer, not a painter, when a girlfriend suggested we have a girls night out at Clay Café in Grandview I was a little hesitant. Normally our girls nights out feature some type of happy hour with food and drinks. Painting seemed like a bit of a stretch, but a bunch of us agreed to try it and I have to say, what a treat!

When you walk into Clay Café you instantly feel right at home. The space is decorated with what else? Clay artwork and there are pieces to fill up every inch of space and to inspire the hidden artist in everyone. It has a very unique charm and really gets the creative juices flowing. [Read More]

Mazzah Mediterranean Cafe Opening in Grandview

Walked down Grandview Ave today and noticed a new restaurant that looked almost ready to open right next to Great Clips and across the street from Thom’s of Grandview. They had tables set up and a menu board and looked like they were putting the finishing touches on things. The sign on the window said “Mazzah Mediterranean Cafe Coming Soon”. It looks like a very small cafe/carryout type of place. I’m not sure if this is the same concept but there’s a restaurant in Boise, Idaho with almost the same name that also looks really affordable. Here’s the link to that restaurant’s Yelp. Anyone know anything else about this new place?
