In this sluggish economic climate, where jobs are few and far between, one local woman has taken fate into her own hands, founding a business that combines her love of design with a passion for handcrafted goods.

Allison Chapman has an unshakable sense of community. She moved to Columbus last year from Minnesota, gave birth to her second child a week later, and immediately began the process of transitioning her beloved printing business to Ohio. Along the way she immersed herself in local craft culture and tried to meet as many independent business owners as possible. “I want to live in a culture that values things that are homemade,” she said. Last month, she opened Igloo Letterpress in Old Worthington and this month, she began teaching classes for adults and children. Last year over a couple mugs of hot chocolate in their Worthington home, a husband and wife decided to make wooden toys for their two young sons and friends with children. The British master carpenter husband and marketing firecracker wife sourced all-natural local wood, designed kid-friendly shapes, and lovingly finished each piece. The buzz surrounding their charming hand-hewn playthings began to spread and they realized they might be onto something. I had the pleasure of finding a new gem here in Central Ohio, the Ohio Craft Museum. They are presenting “Second Nature: Art from Recycled Materials Inspired by Animals, Plants and Insects,” an exhibition of fine craft forms made from recycled materials. On view from July 12 through August 23, the exhibition features work by nearly 25 artists from across the United States. Everything from old buttons and tin cans to bicycle spokes, linoleum pieces and rubber tires make up the work. Second Nature’ is intended to be an enjoyable and sometimes whimsical exhibition. Then you can go to Village Valuables, the biggest Yard Sale of the city located in German Village from 8am to 3pm. Agora is happening all day at Junctionview Studios. The King Arts Complex is having their annual fundraiser, the 22nd Anniversary Gala: Tapestry on Saturday, beginning at 8pm. Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus is having their annual fundraiser, forte from 6pm to 10pm at Pomerene Hall on OSU’s Campus! The North Market’s fundraiser, the Apron Gala, is happening from 7pm to 10pm. Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus will be at Nationwide Arena. The Eco-Chic Craftacular is going on at the Whetstone Community Center on Saturday and Sunday. Swing Columbus is having a dance event all weekend long in various venues. Rock on the Range is happening at Crew Stadium Saturday and Sunday. And Collier West’s annual Flea Market starts on Saturday and goes until Sunday. Enjoy the weekend!
