So, what sort of hot topics are the suburban mayors thinking about in 2009? A pair of Dispatch articles yesterday reveals two major items: new parking garages being built into denser projects, and new entry point gateways serving as new welcome signs for different areas.
The article on parking decks reveal that Gahanna may be the only current suburb with a parking garage while Grove City and Grandview are both have them in the planning phases for new developments. Other suburbs contemplating them include Dublin, Upper Arlington, New Albany, and Westerville.
As far as Gateways go, both Gahanna and Hilliard are building new street-spanning arches, similar to what can be found through the Short North. Meanwhile, Grandview is looking at ways to turn a development at at the corner of Rt. 33 and Grandview Avenue into a southern gateway into the city.

Interesting …… main ‘hubs’ of suburbs sound like great light rail stops. Might help with the question ‘I dont live by the tracks, why do I want light rail?’ ….. ok, you dont have to, but you could take the short drive to the new parking garage and hop the train from there.
I like Gateways.
I like Gateways.
+1
I do like Obelisks and public squares though (hint: new avatar image)
Coleman needs to take a page from the mayor of another city’s playbook: Hilliard.
“Hilliard Mayor Don Schonhardt is one area official who’s not a parking-garage fan. Asked when his suburb might consider one, he said: “I hope never.
“I think what we’re trying to do is make our community more pedestrian-friendly, so people will leave their cars at home. I don’t think we want to be in the business of promoting additional uses of the automobile.”"
Columbusite is right. Hilliard is awesome!
This street in Hilliard is looking better and better. There’s just no destinations yet, unless your going to take a stroll over to Gun World…
Here’s some more details on the Hilliard Gateway along with a photo. Looks ok I guess.
