Subscription-Based Yard Waste Pickup Plan Approved

By: Walker

Press Release:
Yard Waste Service Available in Columbus

Rumpke will offer City of Columbus residents weekly yard waste service on a subscription basis beginning April 20, 2009.

Residents can start signing-up immediately for the service which will cost $49.50 for the six month season from mid-April to mid-October 2009. The cost remains the same no matter when a resident signs-up for service. Rumpke will collect up to 15 bags, bundles or containers of yard waste per household each week.

“Rumpke appreciates the opportunity to once again offer yard waste collection for Columbus residents,” said Andrew Rumpke, vice president at Rumpke. “We have received many phone calls and e-mails, and our well-trained employees are prepared and excited to hit the streets.”

To begin service, residents may call Rumpke at 1-888-786-7531 or e-mail centralohio.market@rumpke.com. Sign-up forms and other guidelines are available online at www.Rumpke.com.

Yard waste typically consists of organic waste such as grass clippings, leaves, twigs, branches, shrubbery and other garden residues generated during regular household gardening and landscaping activities. Loose materials should be placed in biodegradable (paper) bags or in rigid containers marked “Yard Waste.” Bags are generally available for purchase at home improvement or grocery retail stores. Branches should be cut to four feet lengths and tied with twine or string into bundles no wider than two feet. Each bag, bundle or container must weigh less than 50 pounds.

In 2007 and 2008, Rumpke collected more than 55,000 tons of yard waste from Columbus residents, including nearly 3,000 tons of debris after the hurricane-like windstorm in September 2008.

  • I got a nastygram for my backyard composting last year.  Now they want money to collect yard and garden waste in bags using trucks with big diesel engines.  Awesome.

  • What did the note say? Did they ask you to stop doing it, or was there something that you just weren’t doing right?

I’ve not started composting myself, but I’ve heard from others that there is some specific regulations regarding the types of containers you’re supposed to use when doing it.

  • An interesting item from the Dispatch Q&A about it today.

Q: Can I go in with my neighbors?

A: Yes. There’s nothing in the city’s contract with Rumpke that prevents groups of people from sharing the cost. But Rumpke will stop at only one of the houses.

  • Just printed my form.  Will be working with the neighbors, since none of us really have big yards.

Jonathan Kissel, a spokesman for Rumpke of Ohio Inc., said the company received about 1,500 calls on the first day of the sign-up — more than double its normal volume. Another 250 people inquired by e-mail, he said.

The dirt is flying as two mulch companies — Kurtz Brothers and Ohio Mulch — wage war over your yard waste and your wallet.

The two received a total of nearly $2.2 million last year from the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, which began underwriting the mulch business in 1992, first with Kurtz and more recently Ohio Mulch, to keep branches, leaves and clippings out of its landfill.

The approach was pushed by a change in state law that was designed to extend the life of landfills, and it worked. Kurtz Brothers opened three regional sites where residents and municipal haulers, including Rumpke of Ohio, can dump yard waste free. Ohio Mulch has 17.
