Strawberries are ripe in Ohio – ready to eat?

By: JenniferBrown

Eating local food matters. Consumers are buying organic and looking for the term “free range” on their meats. However, nothing compares to being able to ask a farmer about produce and meats. When it’s on a package, you have to trust – the government, the company … When you eat local, you can ask first-hand and sometimes even see first-hand.

And what better time to support local farmers than now, when strawberries are ripe for the picking, if you will.

You can stop by the farmers’ market or your local grocery store. Or this weekend, kick-off Ohio’s strawberries festivals at Strawberries on the Square in Newark. The weekend includes entertainment and arts & crafts vendors, but the spotlight is on the strawberry shortcake.

Says the website: They start with 250 flats of bulk strawberries, which are washed, sliced and sweetened. Thousands of delicious short cakes are prepared by Riley’s Bakery in Newark and the ice cream is made here locally by Velvet Old Fashioned Ice Cream at the Ye Old Mill.

It doesn’t get much more local than that!

Can’t make this weekend? There are two more strawberry festivals in June.

June 6-7: Troy, Ohio, Strawberry Festival

June 24-27: London, Ohio, Strawberry Festival

  • OMG it’s time for Strawberry picking already ? YAY sooo happy

  • I would like to go, I think Desi is still too little though. but he does love strawberries!

I think swampkitty has been picking a bunch already!
  • Yup, I’ve been picking plenty. The strawberry patch at Hann Farms in Obetz  (Lockborne Rd., just north of Rathmell Rd) is amazing. And at $1/lb. for pick your own quite the bargain. We’re up to about 30+ lbs. of strawberries picked in the last couple weeks alone, with about 2 weeks left in the season.

  • I took my daughter there yesterday after a nice bike ride at Three Creeks, she had a blast. And the berries were the best!

My little one is 2, Desi would probablly love to go to the farm:)

  • I went to the Strawberries on the square this weekend, I have to say it was a huge disappointment.  There were 40+ vendors, midway games and rides which were okay.  The letdown was of the 40+ vendors only 1, the shortcake people, had a single strawberry.  Kind of defeated the point IMHO.

  • Would you say Hann Farms or Circle S ? I have been to circle s but never the other.
