South Campus Gateway Launches “Green” Initiatives

Press Release:

Gateway Goes ‘Green’ With Initiatives for Customers, Residents and Businesses

With the annual Earth Day celebration around the corner, South Campus Gateway is preparing to roll out a series of “Green It” initiatives designed to promote environmental awareness, recycling and energy efficiency. The Gateway management team hopes the mixed-use project on the edge of The Ohio State University campus will become a leader in applying “green” ideas in a business setting.

Among the initiatives underway are:

  • Gateway collects and recycles all sustainable waste daily from its retailers, offices and apartments. More than 12 tons of waste is recycled monthly. The compactors installed to handle the recycling cost nearly $70,000.
  • The Gateway parking garage now features approximately 100 bicycle, scooter and motorcycle parking spaces on its first level.
  • Beginning this summer, the parking garage will designate “premier” parking spaces on each level for use by motor vehicles that are categorized as “low emission/high mileage.”
  • Over the summer, Gateway will install messages on interior garage walls and exterior building spaces that offer “green” information and resources and that permit Gateway retailers and community organizations to promote “green” products, services and programs.

Among the ideas and concepts being explored are:

  • Develop and implement a composting program for all food waste from restaurants and residents.
  • Extend Gateway’s “Green It” education initiatives to include a web page and an electronic information kiosk.
  • Develop and install as a pilot project several “plug-in” parking stations for hybrid and electric vehicles on the Gateway garage roof. The “plug-in” stations would be powered by solar panels.

  • Good ideas. I hope it’s not a little token gesture like Easton’s green initiatives. Walk into the restroom and they have one low flow/no water, save the whales unit surrounded by 8 of the normal “drain the ocean” types.

  • I think an alternate headline could be, “South Campus Gateway installs a $70,000 compactor and some other stuff for pr, costs of which will be passed along to businesses via rent to ensure the development is not viable.”

  • lol tigertree, i was thinking the same thing. way to make things as obvious as possible by touting how much it costs.

premeire parking for hybrids sounds a bit stupid. will they hire someone to check to make sure nobody parks a run of the mill sedan in one of them? how will that help the environment? if anything, they should have SUVs park on the bottom so they don’t waste all that gas driving up a few levels.

The solar panels and plug-in stations for future electric vehicles has the potential to be a Good Thing.

  • So what’s the prize for the first person to get a photo of a Hummer parked in the “premier” space?

  • I’d love to see a Buckeye Bikes station in the Gateway.   Just like the Columbus  Green Spot initiatives, I know it will take time to really make an impact, but I do see this as progress.  I visited University of Wisconsin in Stevens Point and they have serious conservation systems in place.  No paper towels, recycling everywhere,  think twice before using cafeteria tray.  It can work when it is part of a larger system.   My biggest complaint is how ‘trashed’ Columbus is.  I propose we start doing DNA testing on litter and/or issuing citizens arrests when it is witnessed. Give random prizes for people caught picking up litter (left by others).   I don’t understand why there is SO much litter here, the random piece getting away is understandable, but there is way more than a random scattering.   Maybe it’s time to run those crying Native American ads again.  It is the broken windows theory, if areas are cleared of trash, it helps the whole area to refresh.

Wha? Make it more convenient for SUV drivers? Isn’t that called “enabling”? ;)

I think that’s the logic behind offering the premium spots to hybrid or low-emission/high-mileage vehicles; you’re getting the most convenient parking spots. It’s one more incentive to purchase and drive one of those vehicles.

  • I don’t know.. my old civic gets better mileage than any hybrid SUV, and it doesn’t have all those extra battery chemicals that someone will have to deal with in the future. Will they keep a database of cars that get above a certain mileage, or is it hybrids only?

I think this will just add to the perception many people have about the smugness of fart-smelling hybrid owners. (south park reference for those who don’t know,, don’t take it personally :) )

  • Yeah, can’t help but think that they should put more effort into sustaining themselves before they blow wads of cash (that will undoubtedly be covered by the tenants) on trying to sustain the earth.

  • Well, in the parking space description above, they say nothing about hybrids anyway. just “low emission/high mileage”. So I guess some sort of list of eligible cars would need to be kept not just for enforcement, but also to let people know who is allowed to park there.

  • It might be “green” to open BOTH garage entrances so that cars do not have to attempt to enter at 9th (you know, where there’s a giant “PARK” sign) only to discover that entrance is no longer open after 9am and then turn around and drive back to 11th.
